BTW, have any of you checked the Covered Cal site for insurance rate comparisons when you turn 55-60? It's back up now.

I just plugged in the rates for 40-42 yrs old and 58-60 yrs old, same zip code. Almost exactly DOUBLE the amounts, easy for exact same coverages.

I did try an experiment to see how much difference the zip code makes, and sure enough, it can be quite substantial. Plugged in my old S. Redondo zip code and Anthem BC rates for same exact plan at same age and were $500+ less PER MONTH!

Why such a disparity based on zip code alone, all else being equal? Something seems awfully fishy about how these rate premiums are calculated.
Pretty obvious that it's gerrymandered to inflate the costs for those in red districts. I bet Obama personally penned that part of the bill to :fight: you in that ass :roflmao:

So the bill was pulled. I'm shocked all the effort Trump put in to make NFL players look bad didn't get his Obamacare repeal promise over the finish line!
he's not done yet. they're taking down the site for 12hrs every Sunday (open enrollment starts soon). he's threatening to withhold subsidy payments to insurers which will drive up premiums or force them to leave the market. all while Tom Price flies DC to Philly on a private jet costing us $25K.

that's going to make some mighty fine debate material in a few years.

No idea. I'd assume they've got some algorithm but who knows. Do you get the same result when you just go to the provider directly, rather than using covered California?
Yes.

No way would I go thru Covered Cal to get insurance, if subsidies weren't available. Not worth the risk of my personal data online to begin with.

I just used their site to compare rates with others. It's a pretty good site for that task. I went directly thru both Anthem Blue Cross a few years back, and Sharp Health last year. The Covered Cal quotes were near identical to going directly thru providers. Actually a couple dollars less going direct, but only a couple.

The zip code disparity is disturbing though. I would encourage all to check that out, and try different zip codes for the exact same coverage. A $500+ a month difference is HUGE over a year ($6000+).

I have a feeling Anthem Blue Cross is on its last legs in California. With the coming 20-35% rate hikes for 2018, and already the most expensive here, they may be done in the private purchase market. Employers may be looking to switch too if they're getting the same hit, and that will be the nail in the coffin for ABC in Calif.

it's Cheeto's to own right now. The Dems need to pull their heads out their asses and be more aggressive driving that message home

Doing nothing to the ACA doesn't make it belong to Trump. Obama designed it to fail and so far Trump is not intervening in that arc. The "transitional" subsidies will sunset as was allegedly the plan to begin with, so no actions are required for that to happen.

Even if there are failures in some states there are probably a few states like California that will prop it up on their own.

Unless Obamacare actually fails, there's no point to drive home. I'm not sure it will, even with Trump meddling in it.

I said the same thing about Mitch McConnell's theft of a SCOTUS seat. Didn't seem to matter. Never does when you're dealing with politicians and voters with no principals. It's like trying to debate with people who have no regard for the truth. You can't win.

McConnell did what his voters wanted. Trump failed on repeal and may blow it up instead, which will cost at least some of his voters their health insurance. Not sure it's an apt comparison.

Unfortunately many of the mouth breathers who lose their healthcare due to the ineptitude of the Dotard and the GOP will find a way to blame Obama and the Democratic minority.

One of the dumber posts I've seen on the topic. The law of the land is Obamacare. A law written by democrats, passed on a procedural vote entirely by democrats and signed by a democrat president. To this day democrats refuse to lift a finger to fix the mess that they and they alone created and jammed down the throats of the American people.

What part of "you're not invited and we're doing all of this behind closed doors" indicated Republicans wanted their help in fixing it? In fact, there was a bipartisan group trying to figure it out, but Trump and his crew decided to end it so they could fail a third time on their own.

Bernie doesn't know his ass from a hole in the wall and he certainly can't grasp the difference between Health Insurance and Healthcare.
There's a ton of people who don't grasp the difference; its insane when you think about it

That being said, both are in dire need of reform, no question about that, but there is a distinction that needs to be made in order to make the correct reforms

Lets eliminate health insurance all together and go to a cash only model. Work it just like paying for a lawyer and his paralegal. $300 an hour in 15 minute increments for doc, $400 an hour in 15 minute increments for specialist and $150 an hour in 15 minute increments for a nurse practitioner. Pay cash for any prescriptions based on actual cost plus a 40% markup.

Charity care or medicade for the truly poor and elderly. If you're an illegal we give you a discounted airfair and ambulance ride back to a hospital in your country and region of origin. If you're a tourist we take credit cards.

Done.

First of all, those rates would sky-rocket. Supply and demand gets a little wonky when you're talking about the only life you have to live and don't forget doctors/surgeons are in school/struggling through internships for - in many cases- 3x as long as it takes to become an attorney or some other type of professional.

But beyond that, why do you feel qualified to speak on this subject GromsDad? As far as I am aware, you suffered greatly as a result of your failure to secure proper insurance for your family and had to beg for help paying your child's medical expenses. I don't mean to make light of the situation. It is truly tragic and I hope no one anywhere ever has to deal with that situation. And yet, the bullshit you espouse about health insurance would lead to untold numbers of people winding up in a similar situation. You were fortunate to have a strong community around you that rallied for a good cause. Not everyone is so fortunate. What then happens to those families? What would have happened to your family if no volunteered to pay your families' medical bills for you?
