Probably the best option is something along the lines of this where an electric motor drives the car while a gas or diesel generator replenishes the batteries as needed. Still a long way to go before something like this is desirable and affordable for the masses.

This is how the Volt works and most "plug-in hybrids" as I understand it

This is also how a locomotive works.

I want both sources powering my drive wheels at once, in the vein of hybrid supercars

Pretty much the same system as the first original Hybrid, the Honda Insight from 1999 onward. Only to be refined by Toyota with the Prius.

We owned a new Insight from 2005 thru 2015. Unreal mileage that beat most all others, even today. But, it was still using the early tech, and to get said high mileage, weight reduction was of most importance. Only 2 people max, and it would get blown around on the freeway during Santa Anas or a big rig passing by.

Hybrids will fill the alternative niche for while before pure EV's make any real inroads on most consumers. Plug-in autos are still a bit too restrictive for most free-wheeling drivers that just want to get up and go without worrying where they can plug in 200-300 miles later (and a forced stop for an hour, at least). Or have a good size family car that can haul 3 kids and a bunch of stuff to the National park, beach, or road trip, without major pre-planning where you can plug-in 100-200 miles down a wilderness road.

Not impossible, but more hassle than most instant gratification consumers want to deal with.
