Can anyone tell me what all is involved in getting into shaping?! (i.e.,tools, materials, etc.) I've been wanting to start for sometime now but don't really know where to begin or how to go about doing it. Any input is appreciated.
Thanks

first where are you from? I can get you some better resources if i know your area,
you dont need much to get started you can get started sweet for 300.00 in tools or OK for under 100.00
you need
surform: 15 bucks
assorted sandpaper 36 grit 80 grit 120 grit10.00
sanding screens 120 grit and 220 grit 5.00
level cheap one for 10.00
small and large block planes 20.00
framing square 2 foot one if your only buying one 7.00
tape measure 5.00
a curve set protractor are good to have too 10.00
Foam for sanding blocks 5.00
foam rubber for backing sanding screens , free from the trash of any upholstery shop.
pencils and sharpies.

if you want to go all out and get the Clark Hitachi planer for 200.00 thats great too and easier, If you get a planer get this one, any planer will work and most will be cheaper, its built for the task and no sense in buying tools 2x

Im sure I forgot something or another but thats the basics. thats the basics make most of your other tools like calipersetc, check www.swaylocks.com in the photoarchives for tools.

mandatory tools can be bought a www.foamez.com.

tools u really need in my mind are...

surform, for cutting down the foam,
a handsaw for cutting the ouline,
and a small block plane for cutting the stringer. these 3 items probably run u about $70-80. u'll also need sandpaper to smooth out the blank. u can make ur own sanding block out of a piece of scrap plywood.

another thing which u may want fi u got the money that will make it easier ...is the hitachi modified planer that clark foam makes. u can egt it on foamez, for 200 and change. this will make it easier to skin the blank...and take down the foam qicker.

u can build ur own racks ...out of about 15$ worth of 2 by 4's. buy some cheap foam from a foam/ upholstry store. just cheap squishy foam, for sanding and to pad ur racks. it works fine if u can't find foam rubber.

u probably wnat to pick up shaping 101 video by john carper. itll tell u everything u need, and everything u need to have.

alltogether...when i started out, it cost me aroudn $600 or so. but that was with shaping and glassing tools.

blanks will cost u about rougly $50 each. clark foam makes them...

basically go on foamez.com....search the whole place. if u plan on sanding and glassing, u can buy it there also.

but to start off, buy the video and watch it over and over, and write down the supplies u need.

goodluck

these prices are based on discounts given for owning a tax payer id liscence thing. which u can buy for like 10 bucks, and it take a chunk otu of ur cost!

4 oz cloth for a shortboard runs for me about $2.40 per yard. u use 2 layers ont he deck, and 1 on the bottom. so for a 6'0" shortboard, it'll run u about $15.

fins...fcs- cost me $30 per set. this comes with plugs, and fins. assuming u have the fcs kit, which costs 100 and change.

resin...i'd say it costs me about 25$ for a shortboard.

blanks, are about 45$ for shortboard blank. and get moreexpensive as the size changes.

plus ur probably spending another...5-10 bucks, on paint and sandpaper.

all together a board costs u a little over a $100. i calculated my costs the other day , and a 6 foot board runs me about 105$.

all this is considering u have the tools.

tools u will need for glassing/sanding....

squeegee
laminating surfboard resin
4 inch brush's
sanding resin
cheap buckets for resin
4 oz and 6 oz cloth...4oz for shortboards, 6 oz for long boards
a milwaukee sander/polisher for about $200
an assortment or sandpaper,a dn finishing paper.

i think i covered everything.

as i said before the smart thing to do.... is to buy john carpers "shaping 101" and "glassing 101" from foam e-z. this will not only show u everything u need to learn to start making surfboards, but it will tell and show u what u need.

good luck

Edit- Sorry, now I see why you asked, for the discount not just the taxes.

highline in CA its COMPLETELY different,
the website is www.boe.ca.gov
The offices closest to us are
Long beach at 100 w broadway
and santa ana its in the civic center plaza across from the federal building.
You have to submit tins of info and essentially you are a taxpayer to the state. You have to file your state income taxes quarterly.

The long story short is until your doinga bit of volume its not worth the hassle, oh and you better be good at math the tax returns are not fun and late penalties are stiff......
any other questions PM ME

you just have to learn how to cut your costs and maximize your dollars and go from there i wouldnt reccomend getting one until
1. you have a shop
2. your doing at least 10 boards a month start to finish.

#1 you are supplying all your info to the county etc, your not gonna want to tell them your building boards at home

...hmm thats interesting. nothing of the sorts here. basically it just gives me proof i am a manufacturer and therefor getting product for cheaper. even some pads, leashes, waxes ect. eventually i'll get the big liscnce...coting a couple hundred. but i dont think its truly needed for me atleast till i graduate. if i am doing something illeagally they can come in my porch and drag my as* out.
thats odd how its different though. bc for me it was no hassel...paid like $10 and they gave me a sheet of paper with my name and buisness and stuff on it.

good luck.

dk make sure you know what your form is 100% because I have one for texas too and its abot 99% the same way as CA, and our old company for tax reasons was a florida company we had one there too, the pupose of the certificate is..
they give you stuff tax free and because YOU are the one collecting tax for the state, Think about it if not for that whats the purpose of the paper just for the state of florida to get you hooked up? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
Be very carefull you are far too young to have to go to court for things such as
False reporting
tax evasion
fradulant tax recording.
In all 3 states it is Illegal to use a resale id to buy personal stuff, the way we do it if i buy anything for me i still resell it to myself for the same price on paper and add tax.put it this way, I F'ed on my first one, ive had a total of 3 and im 27 now had the first one around 17-19 and i basically did what your doing, made some boards baught alot of stuff and i didnt keep records or file, they assigned a value to me and taxed that value, im still paying on that today with nothing i can do about it.

Moral of the story, Nothings free make sure you know about everything 100% pay now dont pay later.
