Save Oceanside Sand Meeting

Last I heard they want to construct 5 jetties (groins) in strategic locations through Oceanside to prevent beach erosion. Sort of like what we see in Newport. This will obviously make for a ton of new surfing options and has potential to make for some epic new sand bars. I encourage everyone to get involved and support this project.

The Oceanside Boardriders and other surf adjacent folks have an ally in Councilmember and mayoral candidate, Keim. So this might have legs.
I'm not sold at the moment, there are a lot of business and Real Estate interests pushing for it. But I'm not totally averse to the idea. It could be great, but it could be a disaster.

The Carlsbad thing is real- rumors abound that they are going to try to stop this from happening for that exact reason. For Carlsbad it's good business that Oceanside has no beach and theirs are huge. Big time tourist dollars at stake.

Yes, they're even hidden from the waves.
The jetties envisioned are designed to protect infrastructure and real property interests with a secondary focus on sand. Recreation although important to us, is not a top consideration...How many jetties, rip wrap, and coastal concrete armaments have actually improved surf conditions?

Hey Osiders! It’s time for the first (very EXCITING) public workshop for RE:BEACH - the Coastal Resilience Design Competition that will help shape the coastline of Oceanside.
The public workshop is August 29th, at Oceanside City Hall from 4-7pm and this is something you definitely want to check out.
Come out and learn about the design competition that will help retain sand on our beaches, restore and enhance our once thriving natural ecosystems, and ultimately improve our coastal community for years to come. This international design contest will have an end goal of choosing a pilot design to help retain sand on our shores and provide resiliency to our communities.

The Competition:
At the core of RE:BEACH is a global design competition in search of the most innovative multi-beneficial, and feasible solutions to preserve sandy beaches in Oceanside. A global call to action was released in spring 2023, inviting landscape architecture and engineering firms from across the world to apply to participate in RE:BEACH Oceanside. A Jury and an Advisory Panel composed of local, state, and national experts was formed early on and helped in making the ultimate decisions on the finalist, based on experience, prosed approach and track record of delivering innovative solutions.

The rest of north county San Diego has suffered considerable surf quality declines as the beaches have reduced natural sand flow through development.
I find it cute when humans try to deconstruct and fix the destruction they themselves set afoot.
