Quads (for everyday waves) are a modification of a twin fin.

Quads (for barrels and/or really big waves) area modification of a thruster.

They’re two different things.

Nailed it - But I would modify the second one as per the above.

I have no idea about the rears or fronts further forward or further backwards, but to Duffy's point, the rears set out wide towards the rail I thought/read was for your grovel quad fish, and the round pins with the rears set a bit closer to the stringer is more of a good wave setup, I think it's McKee placement or some such.

In addition to placement, I think fin cant varies somewhat and plays into these five box setups' feeling as thruster vs quad.
All I know about quad fin placements is that the front fins on my old stretch superbuzz were seemingly in the middle of the board, and that thing was magic. I rode it exclusively with the FU Buzz Quads. Sucked as a thruster, comparatively.

My 2x4 stepup works as both thruster and quad.

Also, I pretty much only trust Stretch with quads, but I haven't really f'd with them since I sold my superbuzz and quadfish...
