Can you get from Tamarindo(I'll be staying in Grande actually) to Negra and Avellanes without 4X4? I haven't been to Costa Rica in a few years and can't remember if we actually used the 4X when we drove through. I'm going on the cheap and would like to opt out of the 4X4 since the little lady will be blowing our wad on expensive lodging.

I wouldnt do it without a 4X4 in the dry season. You have to cross several river beds and even when it's dry season they can have a significant amount of water in them sometimes. Hell the road is so rough I couldnt see doing it without a 4X4.

Yeah, I think I've come to that conclusion. I guess I'd rather spend the money for that extra piece of mind and have the ability to search for empty waves.
