Ok, I am, like others on this forum right now, in the process of getting ready to order a board. Ok, by "getting ready" I really mean I'm waiting for my tax refund to arrive, but there is still a decision to be made.

Here is my question:

I live on the gulf coast, so I mostly ride small, mushy waves, with about one session out of 8 or 10 having waves with some real shape. I know some people who ride trifin eggs around here, and they seem to have pretty good luck with them.

How would a bonzer egg perform in these same conditions? Would that bonzer "fifth gear" come into play, or is that only when the waves have some decent power? Also, with the red-x system would I be able to switch between bonzer and thruster set-ups for varying surf conditions?

Or should I get a thruster with channels? Or just a straight thruster?

Or maybe I should get a spoon...

Oh, and yes I did read the bonzer history on the Campbel bros site, so I know that they used to put bonzer setups on funboard/egg-type shapes. But I didn't find anything there on what kind of wave conditions they were suited for.

Our waves here in the gulf, most of the time anyway, have a pretty unique character.

they are more suited to waves with some push behind them, otherwise the extra 4 fins will just create drag. you would probably be better off just getting a singlefin, or twin fin fish, or even a straight thruster with a flat rocker, and boxy rails.

Well, I am really looking for a design with a little fuller nose than what I am riding everyday now, for the smaller days. My everyday board is great above shoulder high, but I'd like to get on the really small mush a little better. My everyday board is 6'5" 12-20-14 2.625

The reason I was thinking egg instead of an old-school fish or a modern fish with the wings and everything is basically a matter of aesthetics. I want something that will be functional and fun on the gulf coast wrinkles, as well as look nice when leaning against my living room wall. My fiance would really appreciate that aspect too.

Any other suggestions? Anyone?

Shwuz,
Yes, you can get a Bonzer egg with Red X that could be ridden in any number of fin configurations. But, you'll probably find that most often you want be riding it as a Bonzer in mush. If you let TFAD and pinliner have a shot at it, it will look awesome.

Malcolm is going to take a break on the Bonzers until around the end of March. Save your pennies and plan for the future if you want one.

"As we begin a new year I would like to express my profound thanks, as well as
an apology to all of you who have ordered boards and put up with the hassel of
getting one.

Honestly, I never intended it to be a Carlos Castaneda-Don Juan type of
adventure to accomplish the simple task of ordering and receiving a surfboard.
No excuesses. I just wasn’t ready for the response we have received. Plain and
simple, I have been a bit overwhelmed, and because I have to keep the day job,
it has been difficult to be as responsive as I should be.

During the first two months of this year we will be putting together a wide
array of plugs so we will be able to accommodate the range of custom shapes we
have been producing. Having a good portion of the boards milled by KKL will
allow me to get boards out much quicker, while maintaing the same quality and
individuality that is the heart of the Bonzer Project.

Secondly, we will be updating and expanding the website. As many of you have
noticed, it has been in a state of suspended animation for awhile. We just
haven’t had time to keep it up. We are going to make a strong effort to keep it
moving forward and keep things interesting.

In order to accomplish all of this and to catch up on my backlog of orders, I
am going to have to take a short break in accepting orders. With this in mind,
I have set March 15th to get started again. I am sorry for any inconvience, but
this is necessary for the long term survival and growth of the Bonzer Project.

Peace, Love, and Light,

Malcolm Campbell"

So then the red-x bonzer system might be a good set-up for me, as far as versatility is concerned...

Does the template for the red-x bonzer setup provide a good rear fin location should I want to just run a single fin too? Damn, I'd need a lot of fins for all the possible combiniations, huh?

And yes, Tom@daum, the idea is definitely to have it done through Moonlight, and get the whole package... Tint and lines and all...

ETA on my tax refund: 5-7 business days. I guess I better get to deciding what kind of colors I want to get.

I'm taking suggestions on that, too, always open to ideas.

So stoked...

You could ride it as a Bonzer, a thruster, a four-fin, a single fin and I believe it would even work for a twin fin. You'd need 200 bucks worth of fins, but it would be fun.

That is a fantastic idea, GWS.

So fantastic, in fact, that I think I'll steal it. Or borrow it, to be more accurate, since my using that setup won't prevent you from using it too.

I only really want to be able to go thruster, bonzer and single, so I can probably do that with only about $150 worth of fins, maybe less...

Now, I really need to figure out color...

Shwuz,
The back side fins are in the correct thruster location. But, the range of our center boxes is not enough to do a Bonzer center fin or a thruster center fin. So, the Bahne, or F/U center box is a good way to go.

If you're desperate for a Bonzer, and don't care about colors, you don't have to wait. They have several clear MC Bonzers in a variety of sizes in stock at the Ventura Surf Shop.
