Polycarbonate Surfboards?

I have heard talk of new boards made from polycarbonate plastic (similar to GE's Lexan) that are light, flexible, and extremely tough. Rumor has it that Chris Ruddy with Ukulele Surfboards is active in this endeavor. Anyone with more information on it? Interesting topic!

We have the worlds first all polycarbinate surfboard. The first were ABS designed by Warren Wojak who originally worked in the solar heating cottage industry.

The new board has been tried by Saun Tompson and he noted it was fun. Sealing the ABS was easy though the polycarbinate hollow board leaked in the proto-type stage.

They are extremely fast boards in either ABS or polycarinate. Very ding resistant, though they do buckle in large surf. Bend but not break.

Thinking of using a EPS core with polycarbinate and ABS composite next. This would cure the leaking problem. ABS works unreal by itself. The hollow boards maybe one of the fastest boards I have ever ridden!

whats abs??? how the hell did you bend the ;polycarbonate coz its got high heat distortion temperature??are you talking acrylic and not polycarbonate ,coz they look identical??? this sounds interesting...

Bert, ABS is the kind of plastic the most of your car parts are done.

And speaking about polycarbonate surfboards, how strange is it that I was thinking on it just a week ago! The answer is blowing in the wind...

Check that... I'm not thinking they need high heat distortion temperature to make an hollow board

ABS is used in car parts, mostly fenders and bumpers. Really tough stuff, I've used it for stringers. Tears up planer blades like you wouldn't believe. As for polycarbonate it still needs to be used in conjunction with a fiber, otherwise it's too flexible. I worked on a project with the Florida Institute of Technology where we built parts for a human powered boat out of a fabric that was a woven polycarbonate\fiberglass hybred. We set the mold up with this fabric under vacuum and thyen put the whole thing in an oven. The polycarbonate melted and wet the fiberglass. The whole thing then cooled and the part was done. Everything goes in dry and theres no reactions or vapors. All is done with just heat. It was quite cool. We also did some stuff with epoxy prepregs and shrink wrap. Also cool stuff.

Yeah, ABS is quite fun for stringers, I used it one time with Styrofoam blank and epoxy resin. Just difficult to find with enough length and few thickness.
I believe ***** Brewer is now making some boards with this kind of stringers...
