You'll score no doubt in my mind. I've never been but Peru is on my short list of places I'd like to go. If you are a goofy footer, you'll be in heaven as left points are the rule of thumb. It will be overcast; think Winter in SoCal temps, maybe cooler. You can find the average year round temp for Lima right here.

Bring the 3/2mm full suit and you'll be good to go. I'm super jealous. I am trying to figure out if I can swing a 9 day trip to Peru sometime this Summer but my schedule is pretty tight so far. Wavehunters.com has some good info on Peru; check it out.

[edit: Oh yeah, I don't think crowds should be a major concern. Most surfers don't like to go on a trip knowing that they'll have to wear a fullsuit the entire time. You can look at this Peru swell forecast from Wetsand.com before you leave to see if you are going to score.]

I'm torn between a trip to Peru or Fiji this summer? I guess it'll come down to money. I did find a $650 flight to Fiji out of LAX and I know Peru can be cheap. I don't know where to go, any thoughts.

Fiji? Yawn (1/2 kidding + 1/2 serious). <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/computer.gif" alt="" />

I'd rather take the more off-the-beaten path experience and hit Peru. Yeah - I'm contradicting myself b/c as I type I'm planning a trip to Bali but behind Indo, Peru is on my very short list of places that I want to go surf (see above).

I think it all depends on what destinations you've previously done for a surf trip. I'm about balancing experiences and I think if you've already done the South Pacific before, maybe you should change it up. However, if you've *always* dreamed of going to Fiji and have never been then do it! After all, that is why I went to Tahiti. Personally, I don't think about whether the destination is cold or warm water but then again I don't live near the ocean like you do. Focus on the experience of the destination, the culture, the types of waves you want to surf, and then consider your wallet.

my $00.02,

This is exactly why I'm shining on a trip to Costa Rica(been 4 times) or Hawaii with my lady.
I'm turning 30 and want the trip to usher in a new era if you will. My last couple trips have been destination trips where we stay in one house and hand out with friends. I miss really travelling. Maybe I'll go solo(done it many times). The experience of bussing it around Peru would be great. I also just watched Motorcycle Diaries (a must see if you like to travel). The movie and the timing has got me stoked on travelling again.
I've done Bali and would like to hit up a new continent. Machu Pich would be a must. Also that camp near Lima is very affordable. I'm leaning towards Peru.
I can drink frozen drinks and sit in swimming pools anyday.

I'll be UBER-jealous if you go to Peru! I would love to know any info on Bali as I'm going in September for 9 weeks (solo).

p.s. I'll be sure to check out "The Motorcycle Diaries"; I've heard good things about that movie.

Went to Peru in Feb 02 during their summer. Water temps weren't bad at all, but they cool off later in the year. We were in springsuits & longsleeve tops the whole time.

We flew into Lima and were picked up and transfered to Punta Hermosa where we stayed. There was a fun right infront of our room and plenty of surf 15-20 minutes in either direction. We surfed a couple small points in the area, but nothing like you can find up north at Cabo Blanco or Chicama.

All in all it was a fun experience. Nice people, fun surf, good food.

We got a package deal through Surf Express.

Here's some pics:

Bali will be great.
Definately go to Nusa Lembongan. Get the Indo surf and Lingo book, really a helpful tool. I'd be careful around Kuta nowdays. You gotta walk Kuta Beach and look at the topless chickies. That time of year Nusa Dua and that side may be working so check those spots. Go towards Java and hit up Medewi and the new spot they've found that way. Less crowded and fun to just see the island. Get a cheap boat trip to Lombok and Lacerations (you can get them on the cheap around Kuta last minute). Seems like the time of year you are going will be less crowded than summer with swells still pouring in.
Get surf and Lingo and your set.

Was it easy to find the spots?
I am thinking of going with a camp, but would love to save money and rent a car, stay in cheap hotels, and search on my own. However, I will probably be on my own, so I don't know. Is it cool for a girlfriend trip? She may come for 4 days on coast and 3 to Machu Pichu.
Thanks.

We had a guide, so it wasn't a problem. The coast is fairly visible from the main road, so if you don't mind doing a little searching you'll be ok.

If your girl is a bit rugged she should be fine too. The beaches were pretty nice, but I'm not sure about the accommodations elsewhere.

My girlfriend just heard from someone how dangerous it is and blah, blah, blah. Does anyone know anything about this? Girlfriend friendly? I know a lot of peolpe go there and hike Machu among other things. Sketchy, or just watch out for your stuff? They say El Salvador is super sketchy, but I had no problems.

pretty saved but you still need to use common sense (especially when it comes to your personal belongings).
The spots are really easy to find in the north... can't really speak about Lima (which could be a bit more dangerous).
Peru is all about Macchu Picchu (very safe there) and 3 days may not be enough.
