Was there too 2/21 & 2/22. Didnt bother with the top, but the snow showers improved the surface more than I expected so all in all a good trip. Seeing our friends 7-year old in perfect control and picking up some speed on a snowboard was really cool. This weekend at Mammoth was lots of fun, despite being firm.
It has been a pretty terrible January and February in the Sierra. It reminds me of my next to last winter living in Tahoe, which was 02/03. We started well in December, the base was great on Jan 1. Then January sucked, no big deal, that happens. Then February sucked. Then March sucked. Then we got 150 inches from April 1 to May 10. It was the best 40 days of my skiing life. The storms were perfect, you would get two storm days, then a couple of clear days to hit big stuff, then another storm would roll in. I got to see Tom Wayes and Shane McConkey hit Pony Express. I got to see Robb Gaffney become the first to make a turn in Schmidiots. I saw countless other people tee off. I straightlined the Tube and Extra Chute more times than I could count. The only negative was that I looked down the Chimney Sweep numerous times, and kept backing off. The Sweep was my Daisy Buchanan, it had been my goal from when I first moved to Tahoe. I kept backing off, then around May 10 it stopped snowing, I had blown my chance. I got hurt the next January and my ski bum career came to an end. The Chimney Sweep is still the one that got away. Was there too 2/21 & 2/22. Didnt bother with the top, but the snow showers improved the surface more than I expected so all in all a good trip. My brother and his family got lucky in Tahoe this past weekend with 6"+ of new snow while they were there. The Sierra's were pretty much dry for a month (from ~Jan 17th until this past weekend). It's really put us behind for the season, but at least we had a good start and there is enough to ride on.
Staying on Copper Mtn. CO. this week as some friends in Denver, sick of the I-70 traffic, got a 3-month rental there this season. I've never been, and it looks like they got some fresh snow this past weekend but is clearing out to be sunny and mid-40's (my favorite) while we are there. Stoked!

Have been waiting to pull the trigger on Baldy / LA again for so many years. If I get a day open and chair 4 pops I plan to take 2 buddies who've never been. There's something special about that place, if only youthful nostalgia for me.
Looks like we're gonna score at Copper... Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, temperatures are supposed to top out in the low-to-mid 30s with mostly sunny skies, then on On Friday and Saturday, our two days on the hill, the temperatures are supposed to climb into the 40s and we could see more clouds cover the sky in advance of the next storm.
As for ABasin, Ive heard stories, but it'll probably never happen. I'm just not a big Colorado fan, and dislike the attitude so many of their snow snobs have about their dry snow vs. California's Sierra Cement, which isn't always the case. The fun factor and terrain enjoyment isn't greater, for me anyway. I like to mix it up and go different places, but California is home.
with the hot temps, the snow ain't going to last that long. can already see dirt on the WH2 Mammoth cam.Gonna be a total sh!t show. That operation can’t handle the crowds they’re gonna draw. Especially if they’re social distancing 1 per chair. Tempting but no.

I honestly wonder how they are going to make any money with this. From what I gather Baldy gets most of their winter revenue from scenic rides. I would think most of the people who have been up there the last couple of weeks are pass holders, I doubt they are selling all that many tickets.Yep.
Also read that Baldy is operating at only 10% of their cap to handle social distancing. So I was wrong about crowds. Actually kinda cool. Wonder if they're even to meet operating costs at 10% of cap with no rentals or lessons?
Here in CO they are planning on opening when snow allows. Lifts will be ridden single or with family members. Lot of places going to limit ticket sales and require them to be purchased in advance.Welp! Before 20-21' thread gets going, anyone have any idea on if/what/when any ski resorts will be opening? Hoping for some slope time!
Sick photos @Iceman!
