What was the last board you clicked with well & what was the fin setup on it?
MR/Mayhem Cali Twin .... running Al Merrick Keels ... 3 or 4 days ago board/setup just f*cking rips - i love it. More relative to this post i have been experimenting with fins on a new Ghost for a few months .... have found a thruster set (Machado's) that seem to click but not a big thruster fan ... been surfing twins for a couple years now and going back to a thruster setup just feels slow to me. The Roberts quad set worked ok in small waves but not enough drive for pumping conditions .... I just compared the Future Shaper5 quad rears i just picked up yesterday with the Roberts rears ... definite difference in foil ... the new set is definitely flat foiled .... is it recommended that the fronts be flat foiled as well??

I run Roberts L (Generation series / it has inside foil) with flat foil rears and I love that combo.

Keel fish are known for being drivey, especially if you have a wave with some runway. They are some of my favorite boards to surf because of the drive and feel they have. I only ride quads in small surf where I need to generate speed. For me, they work great in those scenarios. I'm much more consistent on thrusters so I go that way instead of quads usually on better days. But just thinking if you have something your already clicking with so well, I'd stay that course. Ghost is a very good board for critical waves, but it isn't for everybody. Its possible some sort of step up fish could just be a better fit for you and feel more natural coming off your cali twin.

In terms of how I choose my quads though, I usually start with my favorite thruster fronts in my favorite construction to get some sort of familiar feel. I have a couple of rear quads in the same overall size but with different templates that I'll bring out and swap during a session to help sort the rear. Futures legacy series is nice for testing because you can get the same fin in different sizes and different styles (raked, neutral, pivot).

Thx for the feedback .... great advice .... i picked up the Ghost at the beginning of our off season .... so in all fairness ... i haven't had a chance to really see how it goes in good waves ... season is just getting underway now. My plan for this season ... a two board quiver ... the Cali Twin as my DD .... and the Ghost for when it is more critical. It could be once i get it in something over head high .... the fin setup will sort itself out. Experimenting .... has been interesting .... seeing how fins work differently ... with different boards, conditions, etc. .... it's been an education ... so I'm not complaining ..... I actually created a spreadsheet .... with the setups i've tried ... conditions and comments on how it felt ..... it's been a good reference looking back as to how it felt ... what i liked and didn't like. But i think its good to hear how others sort their way through it as well.

Yea vote on flat/inside foiled everything if the problem is drive and there are convex fins in the mix.

Dialling it back to 20 years ago:

Anyone recall what quad rears (if any) were like with the H2s?
Same cant as the front or upright like a center fin? Concave foil or flat foil? And size?

M set already has a S center fin and I tried M fronts with canted S rears. Provides too much lift (initial stiffness then the tail takes off like a foil board).

Baie dankie.

I believe the rears i have are 80/20 ..... pulled in tail ... standard 5 fin box placements. The set i've been playing around with is a Roberts med set .... fronts have the V2 foil. I think they are a neutral fin but have a very narrow tip ... the rears are more on the rakier side. I've tried throwing a set of (i hate to say it) large AM2s in front with same rears .... was a disaster .... felt sluggish, no glide, no control. I tried the Machado med thruster fronts (slightly bigger than the Robert's ... bigger tip) felt better than the Roberts but like the Roberts ... not enough drive .... coincidentally the Machado's also have the V2 foil. Maybe it's the V2 foil that is making feel like there is not enough drive ... too much lift in turns possibly? BTW - i drive off my rear foot. Yesterday, i picked up a set of Future Shaper5 quad rears ... appear to be flat foiled from what i can tell ... a little taller than the Roberts but still more of a raked template. I also plan to pick up a Rasta quad set .... but was curious on how other's go about dialing in their quad fin setup.
Fronts - wide base, flat foiled.

Rears - one fin in the center box.

You should ride it as a thruster.

Yeah ... you're probably right its what it was designed as .... gonna try it again with the Machado thruster set in better waves ... went pretty well the first time with them in small conditions ..... right now though ... can't seem to put the Cali Twin down .... yesterday ... had a couple of bombs ... 6'-8' faces .... running the AMK keels .... did one of the best carves i think i've ever done ... going full throttle on a walled up section dropped to the flats and then buried the inside rail went up the face and off the top .... rails and fins held like i was on a track ... so much fun. I gonna get back on the ghost this week .... looks like we have multiple swells lined up back to back right now and its suppose to get bigger.

Just crossed my mind .... and i'm not even doing bong hits at the moment .. but didn't you post not long ago that you ride your Ghost with AMT fronts and two nubsters in a quad configuration? Curious ... if you've given up on that setup?

Yes. I’ve done that in my Dark Arts ghost. When I switch from riding twins to the ghost i put in that setup. If it’s round barrels and critical I run just regular quads. I’ve used True Ames quads and Dark Arts fronts with Album NVS rears.

Just got a Varial ghost that I haven’t ridden yet. @sh3 just gave me some Futures based K2.1 quads that I put in it. Need waves.

I used to run the K quads in all quads all the time some years back until a very very good, respected by everyone, guy that you would listen to about anything to do with surfing told me to try my Wizard Sleeve as a twin fin. Another well respected legendary ripper and shaper was in on the conversation and he said because of my size I should throw some nubs in the rears. Magic happened.

BTW the AMT fronts with mini trailer rears is fucking money. Might just go stick with that setup if Slatan fins don’t give me a boner.

The little rears I used are these…

I’ve used the OG nubsters in other narrow tailed boards and have had great success.

On the WSL broadcast at Margies they seemed to be spruiking full fibreglass "tech" over the RTM stuff.

Any ideas why the sudden change? RTM getting more expensive in China vs FG?

Dunno but I noticed that as well. JJF often appears to be on fiberglass fins these days. For a wave like margies it makes sense to want something stiff like fiberglass or techflex.
