I'm not really a Medina fan but he is a beast and if there's an asterisk for JJF then there would be an asterisk if he (Medina) didn't compete as well. Also Medina did that whole thing in the semis where he beat Florence, making Italo an asterisk beater-beater. Props to Italo, a badass and hard-earned victory.

Had to run off for a dinner knowing that Italo and Gabby were entering the final. Checked my phone a couple hours later and didn't receive a text regarding the winner.

Was so stoked to grab a beer, check online, and see that that Italo had won. He just comes across as such a humble dude and genuine. Also stoked that Kelly won the Triple Crown and hopefully wraps it up in 2020 on tour.

Want to see Dos Juans come back next year and OWN IT. Surfing isn't really a "sport" ... but if it is... Gabby is the perfect douche bag villain. Good for the "sport" I reckon.

Before the event started the water patrol cleared the lineup and Petersen and Italo were sitting waiting for the horn to blow. I was kinda far away so I didn’t hear the beach commentators say 10 minutes to start. Italo whips on a BD wave and eats sh*t. I thought oh no, pressure got to him. I checked my phone clock, it wasn’t 8am yet. He was just warming up. Next Italo whipped on a left and got shacked. Then he got a runner did a couple top turns and boosted a huge straight air at the end. The beach erupted. All this before the heat even started. Petersen kinda hassled him for the first warm up wave, must be in a contest surfers dna to do that, but just sat there after he figured the heat didn’t start. Italo looked loose and was having fun.

WSL showing it has moved on from what surfing really means to most of us. They continue to distance themselves from the average joe and crap all over what the traditional ethos of surfing is.
Gabby is a talented and determined guy but a train wreck of a role model for young kids.

I'd like to see them make Pipe an invitational contest with the focus on the best Pipe specialists. The first round should be made up of an equal number of WSL CT surfers and Pipe specialists. Let the cards fall where they may from there. There should be a lot more Hawaiian locals in the main event as well as guys who are out there all winter charging. If 3/4 of the WSL CT surfers lose in the first round I'm fine with that.
