I was never into the MTF's way back when, but from what TFAD has always said, the older design was much better than when they re-tooled it a 3-5 years ago. This one looks like it's been sitting in that bag in Kentucky for quite some time. So, it's probably one of the older ones. Someone might get lucky on this one. At 6'1 x 20 x 2 3/4 it is way too big for me. But, if it fit, I'd be following it.

There's the serial number. Maybe someone who knows merricks will know how to date it.

I've got a first gen MTF. It's serial number 77039, so assuming they aren't choosing random serial numbers, this one is a first gen as well. Mine is 6'0" x 19 1/2 x 2 9/16 and I love it. Might have to keep an eye on this listing.

I bought my first MTF on ebay from some guy in the midwest.

I've got a sorta beat up but still surfable one of this generation sitting at my in laws house in Long Beach, CA that I want to get rid of when I'm out there over X-Mas.

If anyone is interested, PM me. It's not in great shape, one of the glass on twins was fixed recently and it's all yellowed but I'd let it go for cheap. I think it's 5'10 x 19 1/2 x 2 3/8 are so but I might be wrong. It's somewhere around that. Love to see it go to a good home.

i've never been able to find out what the second generation design changes were at all.

i do recall checking out alexei usher's first generation mtf at backside rincon back in the mid 90's, and can only guess what the changes are, but that's an old memory to try to base anything on...maybe a slightly wider tail, maybe flat panel vee instead of the deep concave vees, but i have no idea...just remember i'd never seen anyone surf the rivermouth so radically in my life, and so later in the summer when i saw him coming up the stairs i checked out the board.

i wish someone would enlighten me, especially since the redux is such a killer design, better than anything ever, in the right waves.

I will gladly drag my OG MTF into Moonlight on a Friday afternoon with a 6 pack in hand for some comparison and assessment by the folks with an eye for that stuff. I think TFAD has a new version somewhere.

You have sparked my curiosity now on the the CI MTFs. I've got a rather large one (insert LOL here) at 6'4" X 20" X 2 5/8" with a serial of 15649. Since yours is a 77K series number, does that mean this board was shaped by one of the in-house shapers and if so is there any way to tell who it was? The only other identifying mark is an Ichtus next to the number. Thoughts?

I've got 2 oldies and a new. I'll see if I can make a comparison today. One is like, completely buried underneath a bunch of boards in the stack.

alexei usher's first generation mtf
One of them was bought from him and is possibly that same board. Did it have airbrush on the deck?
no airbrush to my recollection, but i could be wrong. i'm pretty sure the board i checked out was a clear 5'11". i stopped him at the staircase at backside rincon because the board reminded me so much of my old 5'8" slingerland wing swallow tail twin.

on top of seeing him demolish reeling 4' rivermouth like nothing i've ever seen, i also saw usher completely dominate oil piers one afternoon in 4-5' (maxing windswell) barrels -- just an insane barrel riding display on an MTF.

bobsurf: stoked to get a report on that!

anyone ever surf the merrick tri-plane-hull twin fin? rode one a couple dozen times in the early 80's...better than my lance collins twins, not as good as the slingerland.
