Every time we have a pumping South swell, I'm reminded how there probably were some spots that held long period Southern hemis before the government ruined them. I hate to post a Surflie link, but this actually was a good article on how things were.

I bet Long Beach, Dana Point, and San Pedro held big South Swells back in the day. Santa Monica probably too. Look at this canyon:

The government needs to fix it, and fix it NOW!

Killer Dana is a tragedy

I heard there were plans to try and remove part of the Long Beach Breakwater and it would make Belmont Shores good

the OP insinuated it was from something man made or at least thats how i read it.
agreed. growing up in the south bay i can attest that zone is loser for souths, and man made geography like pop and marina del rey have next to nothing to do with it

So lame growing up near Dana Point and knowing about Killer Dana. The ol locs loved to rub it in the groms faces that it used to exist.

not sure whats stopping Santa Monica from catching souths other than its facing west?

Regarding Santa Monica, the offshore buoy there is reading the same as the ones in San Diego right now.

What makes the swell window narrower than Mugu/Oxnard or is it the near-shore bathymetry that's important?

Doesn't the gubmit own those Channel Islands and San Clemente Island is strictly Navy
Brandon, this too!
Coming up on San Clemente Island in a small boat is a trip.

It's like going back in time.

You can't see land to the east of you or the west of you.

Then there it is looming.

Been out to SCI a handful of times. I have seen an overhead right ripping down this point. No one out. A guy I surfed IB with alot who is a SEAL and was a BUD/s instructor for 2 years was out there for weeks at a time and surfed all over. Sometimes alone. Yikes. Another SEAL I worked with told me a that a group of them were on a night swim out there and a sumbarine sized GWS swam right under them for like a hundred yards.

Yeah, I heard that break is sharky.

I knew a guy who knew a guy that they would fly out there for the week to teach a couple of English Classes.

I wanted that gig but could never find out where to apply.

Maybe that is the test?

If you can't find out where to apply you don't deserve to work there.
