I've been thinking about something similar for myself. A longer daily driver HPSB. I enjoy riding my step ups so much during the winter. I like the paddle power and the control I get from the extra rail line. For me a 6-2 to 6-4 is pretty standard so I was thinking something like 6-6. My 6-6 stamps warhawk goes so good but it needs a pretty shapely and/or powerful wave to come alive. A relaxed version with a little wider tail would probably be really fun.

A Driver 3.0 would be one worth considering. As well as the sharpeye 77 which has already been recommended. I have the stepup version, the 77+ and it's about as close to a glass slipper as anything I've ordered in the last decade, for better or worse. I think the standard version has a little less rocker/more concave so probably works in more marginal surf but I'd still guess it's not going to be easy for non-pro's to ride in less than good waves.

What kind of tail you thinking? It's hard for me to go for anything but round/round pin on longer boards...

This screams swallow tail to me.

I always liked the look of the stretch swallow tails on the 2x4 outline. Never surfed one tho.

I agree on the round tail aspect. But definitely not wanting a round pin. Thinking round tail, bordering on thumb tail.

Under the radar options…

6’4” stock dims. Continuous rocker but overall, not as extreme and demanding as a 77 could be.
I stick with that kind of rocker on longer boards since I find it less sensitive to foot placement.
I recently ordered from him, after a pause where I have been mostly playing with different board constructions from other shapers.
I managed to get my favorite model, the SW21, done in DA, together with a Stratus for playful beach breaks, and a Zanny for point breaks, both done in PU.
Marcio’s and Xanadu HPSB feels the best to me. I never drove a Ferrari, but I always thought it would be a good way to capture the sensations they transmit.
The way they foil their shapes is pretty unique and kinda similar in a certain way.
Sharpeye’s are consistent with how they feel under the arm. Xanadu’s, on the other hand, on some occasions they feel kinda weird or simple, but they end up feeling magical once you ride them.

any porn of this?

the board...not you. had to clarify before things went south
Thanks for clarification, was getting (still maybe a little) nervous it being a sketchy idea sharing my personal dimensions.

The board however go for it...light as hell, may not be as sexy and a nineties banana but goes well, especially backside.
Enjoy the circa 80's porn, you can imagine slowly peeing the packaging wrap from the middle ;)

I'm not talking full on '80's with vee and shiz, but I can't get the idea of something like a 6'4 x 19 1/2 x 2.5 DD thruster out of my head. Plenty volume with generous rocker to allow for tiger shredz in the bowl.

Anyone in SoCal shape anything like this? Been looking around for a bit...
Didn't see this thread. I just made this. I had one fun session on it two weeks ago and then the surf went flat. I can't wait to get it into some head high+ kind of stuff..

6-5 x 20-1/4 x 2-1/2. Kind of the dimensions you were asking about, although the rocker is "relaxed" which I think is fine for So Cal.

ps...been having problems with images lately including ones I already posted not showing up, at least on my devices

Those 6'4 dims are pretty standard for most shortboard dims these days. Unlike the 80's the deck/rails aren't as boxy and the bottoms are different like you said. I do think the 80s stubby dims and foils (maybe not the vee bottoms) will find more popularity eventually whenever the right guy makes them trendy. Maybe there will be another Simon Anderson aha moment in the twin fin trend but those those things are fun. https://shredsledz.net/2020/03/eighties-ben-aipa-town-and-country-surfboard/

That's a good one if you want to go short + stubby and another that is good in that range or even better if you want a bit closer to HPSB is actually called The Goods. One of Rob's friends that lives in Hawaii swears by it for his smaller to everyday wave board. https://www.robertssurf.com/the-goods.html#/

For a Roberts shortboard in the dims fsg is looking for would be the RBBT, Rob's Big Boy Tri. It's stock 6'4 dims are 6'4 x 19 5/8 x 2 5/8 x 34.22 making it bit fuller than Marcio's 77 in the 2.5 dims (31.2 step up for thinner guy) while his 2 5/8 dims are closer. Rob can do the custom thinner dims easy if you're looking for something thinner or more foiled.

These two Flare Step Ups look pretty good. I had a 6-1 Flare RT that was great but I think it had a bit wider outline. Maybe one of these with a slightly fuller tail...
