A 7' bag on United cost me $80 one way from Hawaii to LAX. Don't let them hassel you for having a 8' bag. There's no reason they should refuse to take it. Just hope they don't charge you more $'s.

But my friend just called them and they said they wouldn't take anything over 80" long?

person on the phone is probably referencing some general guide. What are they going to do when you show up that the ticket counter with a big board bag? Turn you away and refund your ticket? United is bankrupt, they need the money.

That's what I told him. As long as this thread isn't suddenly inundated with "Oh My God, United Totally Fvcked Me" stories, he should be fine. Thanks, y'all.

studogs right. I just looked it up as
I am a travel consultant, and United states
$80--max length not to exceed 108inches.
They are just gonna keep telling you the
same thing on the phone.

Its a whole different deal when you get to
the counter as it depends if you get the
guy who goes by the book or the agent who
will just wave you on.

United broke my 7'11" epoxy board. Before you all get your panties in a bunch, it was a handshaped epoxy. Point still stands - they broke an epoxy board.

I got totally Fvucked by United!

(they did only charge me 42 bucks from Portland to Tokyo)

Years back, I tried an experiment with the
airlines.I was doing alot of surf travelling and wanted my gear intact so....I sent one board on an airline with no board cover----I sent another one in a board bag.

Surprisingly the boardbagged board had all sorts
of new dings and a broken fin from the poor
handling of the baggage people. It was apparent
they were throwing it around and stuff.
The board that was shipped without a cover was
in perfect shape. I even saw them loading it from my seat window and they were treating it so nice and delicately. They saw how nice it was and treated it with such respect.

For what its worth...I now travel with my boards
wrapped in see-thru plastic and they always end
up in great condition at the destination. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

can't remember the airline, but when my new long board was shipped to me the airline put a nice big hole in it. BRAND NEW BOARD! Openned the box, unrapped the board, there on the bottom was this quarter size hole about an inch or so deep. I swear baggage handlers must have throw a suitcase with the wheel rollers on top of my board.

DSSB--sorry you feel my trying something
different was dumb, but it was my stuff to
do with as I pleased.Go ahead and use your
board bag and I'm sure you will be fine---
sounds like some guys have had their gear
mistreated though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

Just sharing what I do and what works for me-
....give me my recyclable plastic bag
and I'm just doing fine. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />
