I know I ask a lot of questions but here goes one more... What is considered a light glass job on a performance 9ft. longboard (equivalent of a 4x4 deck and 4 bottom on a shortboard)? Thanks

probably 4 oz on bottom and 4x4 oz on deck. cant really go too much lighter then that without getting into strength problems. mabe if you were really nuts you could go 4 and 2 oz on bottom. or you could go 4on bototm and double 4 on top with epoxy and have a really light board.

or u could by a shortboard and do all the same "performance" style tricks on a smaller stronger board

On the very small powerless days I still prefer a longboard... it may be because I've never had a real fish.

Longboards with light glass are REALLY prone to breaking, especially if they are also thin. Why would you want such a light longboard anyway? A little mass is a good thing on a 9er.

sorry H.R.

i feel performance longboarding is for confused middle aged men who like to put deck pads all over an oversized shortboard.

why would your handicap yourself and not cut 3 feet off of the board so you can actually crank a lipper and get soem fins out of the water.

longboarding in big waves is different. if a guy has 2 runners to stabalize it when he is dropping in at pipe on a 9er...i respect that.

just dont get why anyone would ride them and try airs and stuff.

i know, i dont like performance longboards either. but theres this guy i have seen out surfing who could probably put you to shame and he does it all on 5 foot windy choppy beachbreak with his 9 footer and he surfs it leashless too. guys nuts, big huge turns and long ass noserides. ive seen him do some insane catches, like going for an off thelip but the board and him seperate, he catches the board in his arms in mid air and keeps it from going over the falls and keeps him from swimming. i believe that if you wanna go surf a 9' like that go ahead, the same as when people wanna surf a 6'2" in 2" surf then thats awesome. some people get really good doing stuff liek that. middleaged beginners on tractioned out funboards are people too, unless they ditch their boards and cut people off.

"Performance longboards" ruined longboarding.....It's for people who want to say they "longboard", yet don't have any skills...At least 99% of the time.

A simple question about glassing but somehow I knew my use of the word "performance" would cause this. I've been surfing for 17 to 18 years and have always shortboarded. 3 years ago I bought an egg because two herniated disks kept me out of the water for more than a year and as I started surfing again I wanted the extra float and the extra time to get to my feet... with the egg I realized I could have more fun surfing small or weak surf on a bigger board than on the shortboard. So this year I said why not get a longboard... after all, I am a confused 36 year old . My question had nothing to do with performance but the fact that the longboard I got seemed pretty heavy and it is a pain to carry to the beach... so for me, it was more a question of practicality. I've only used the longboard a few times and yes, I think I try to surf it like a shortboard because that is what comes naturally and I'm not out there to impress anyone but have fun and make the most out of each session. Next, I'll get a fish (a real one) and who knows, I may put the longboard up for sale.
