Hey all,
I'm looking to take a surf trip in May/June and was wondering if anyone had ideas of where I can go for a nice left point break. Nothing crazy, just something mellow and fairly consistent. I live in NYC and can't travel to the other side of the planet. 5-6 hour flight max.
I've been hitting Costa Rica for the past 4 years and need some change.
Any ideas/experiences would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

So if you've hit Costa Rica a bunch, then Pavones is out of the question. Baja maybe? But I think you won't find too many lefts. I went to Baja recently and would love to get back there for some more exploring.

What about Nicaragua? If you were willing to fly a little further, I'd hit Peru in a heartbeat. Talk about left points.....

Peru is a 9 hour flight but it is the same time zone as NYC so you don't feel like you make up any time. I'm hoping to do a trip there in the next year. Two weeks bymyself surfing and a week with my girl on the inca trail.

Peru sounds like a great destination. I might be going with my lady, so do you know of any places to stay that are nice and more importantly, close to the breaks?
Thanks!!!!

Going with the lady changes things in my book. Just some stuff to think about. Here is what I would think if I was taking my little lady.

Peru's climate is going to be kinda cool, hazy/overcast, and it'll feel like an overcast early-Fall day in NYC to be honest. (Read up on Peru at lonelyplanet.com) Not ideal conditions to work on your suntan if you are a girl. Sure there are artifacts and Inca trails but I don't know how far those are from the ocean; I would *guess* that they'd be mainly inland where the land is more mountainous.

Nicaragua will be hot and tropical. She can wear her slinky bikini and sun herself silly. You can fly NYC-ATL-Liberia (Costa Rica) via Delta (got any skymiles?) and drive 2+ hrs. (guestimate) north into the area of Nicaragua that gets the best surf. By the $4.95 Surf Report on Nicaragua and go exploring. Pay a fisherman to boat you out to some of the offshore spots perhaps? Flying into Nicaragua via Atlanta on American Airlines will set you back $600/each.

Remember, your expectations for a pure "surf trip" needs to be muted b/c girls don't like to wait 6 hours on the beach every day of the trip while you surf your brains out. Trust me. I went 1/2 way around the world to find out this invaluable lesson.

[edit: doing some web searches, you should easily be able to find more information on surfing these destinations.]

Thanks so much for the info. My girl is pretty cool about letting me surf.
She's been on a few surf trips with me and understands that it's more than a hobby to me, it eases my soul and after a 5 hour morning session, I am much happier, and easy going. Keep me out of the ocean for more than a week and I'm a pissy, cranky little boy
But, I'll do more research on the web about both destinations. I don't wanna push it with her, she's a keeper
Peace and waves....

Thought about mainland mex? Its cheap, tropical, and full of ridiculously good waves, including left points. (ever seen Siestas and Olas...if not you should) Pick up the surf report, or check out the World Stormriders guides vol 1 and 2 for more info.

Definitly consider Peru. Its way cheap compared to Costa. Been there in March 2003 and 2004. By 10 AM you need double sunblock. The water was a little cool 68-70F but the air makes up for it. Chicama is the place for your left. Stay on the bluff above the beach, three cooked meals and room for two--48.00USD. You will be looking out on a wave from the point that looks like it is coming from a machine and always offshore winds. Day trip to Puemape and points north strongly suggested. Waves every day and the stoked local grommet spoke the truth--- "When Chicama connects through all five sections it is the center of the universe"
