My grandpa was a carpenter, too. Dropped out of school in the seventh grade. Turned 18 fighting in Europe. Built dozens (hundreds?) of buildings in an Ivy League town. I was in my late 20s before I realized he couldn’t really read.

This song has always reminded me of him. One of the many reasons I love John Prine.
Here’s another from the past for you my bruddah.
I always appreciate your contributions. Tanks!

In Spite of Ourselves, John and Iris Dement. Classic... ‘caught him once and he was smelling my undies’

Never heard of him. Wife and I are listening in bed to some of his tunes now and the melancholy and vibe could not be more poignant

You are what you are and you ain’t what you ain’t. That pretty much covers it.

this is a good quick listen but eerily prophetic (recorded 2016) when colbert says "“we'll probably do this for the internet, unless, you know, something terrible happens and we have to cheer up the world on the TV show"

John Prine reminds me of a time -- early 1990s -- and a place --- Central Coast, thanks to KPIG radio...great music, great shows, great friends and good times. And a few waves...

He wrote so many great songs, but "Illegal Smile" and "Paradise" are my faves of the better known ones. His between song banter is almost as good as the songs.
