If I remember my social studies class right the Pochos (Portuguese) were brought to Hawaii as horsemen and foremen on the ranches and plantations. The Chinese, then Japanese, then Filipinos, etc. were brought in as labor. And the camps were segregated accordingly. Divide and conquer. The Pochos weren’t considered the right white. English wasn’t their native tongue and most were Catholics. But they were whiter than the Hawaiians and all the immigrant Asians so were given jobs as the foremen, the luna.
