Is Kanoa Igarishi the most uninspiring surfer in WSL history?

Honolulu, Hawaii
I forget he's Asian. Don't know if that says more about the cookie cutter pro surfer image or that he's from Orange County.

asian or kahtonk?
asian is a kahtonk word
kind of like how the term "pacific islander" is thrown around here.

could never figure out if I'm a coconut, banana, pineapple or buddah-head
just know I was never royal looking like the pope, wished I was

If asian is a kahtonk word, what do kanaka call asians?

I'm kahtonk. From what I understand katonk was the sound of someone's head hitting the floor after losing a fight. Yeah?

In Hawaii we call people where they come from:
Japanese
Chinese
Vietnamese
Thai
Filopino
Irish
German
Portugese
French
but mostly it's hapa/mixed here

kahtonk came out of WW2 and the 442nd when hawaii locals merged with mainland "asians"
Pineapple - Brown outside/yellow inside
Coconut - Dark brown outside/white inside
Banana - Yellow outside/white inside
these were terms haoles gave the 442nd Nissei/Hawaii fighters in WW2

In Hawaii we don't group everyone into a single homogenous bucket like Asian
The feds did the same with Pacific Islander
grouping Samoans with Tongans with Fijians with Tahitians with Micronesians with Hawaiians
They are all different cultures and even look different

Every culture has good and bad components
doesn't matter what ethnicity you are anyone can be "hawaiian"
maybe not by blood but by heart/soul

So katonk is not generally used outside the context of the 442 veterans? I would hear it with my dad and uncles.

He back paddled me once at pipes while testing a pile of new CI boards that I'm assuming they just picked up.I think this was the year he qualified. I burned him repeatedly after that so much so that his coach or board caddie or whoever it was filming him was waving at me from the beach and yelling at me to stop it when I would kick out and paddle back out.

Always bothered me how people call Filipinos Asian.

In what world is a southwest pacific island nation part of Asia? Its literally an archipelago in the southwest pacific.

It isnt like Japan or anywhere near the Asia landmass.

I haven not heard the term used for a long time. I am of the age where many of the 442 members were still alive and interacted with many, through work, family, and as neighbors. The story of the origin of the term, "someone's head hitting the floor", is the one I was always told by the veterans. Term was used to to identify a 442 member as being from the "Mainland". The original meshing of the 442 members from the Mainland and Hawaii, did not go well and the story goes that the 442 was almost divided while still in training. Version I got was that one of the commanding officers, in a last ditch effort to keep the groups together in one unit was to arrange a team visit to an Internment camp (I used to know which one, but cannot remember right now). Following the visit, the 442 members from Hawaii left with a new respect for the members from the Mainland, seeing what their families were going through.Interactions between the groups were much improved after the visit, and the 442 went into the war effort in Europe. Much respect to all members of the 442.

Get someone with photoshop skills and edit the video and put Dane Reynolds head (or Rasta, or Wardo) on Kanoa's body and then call it a day
