The US had a libertarian government until the Wilson administration. We did just fine

Bernie is talking about things that sound wonderful but aren't possible without a very strong capitalist background to create the wealth in order to pay for the programs. Also, the scalability from small countries to behemoths like the US creates other issues in paying for the programs

When taxation is based on consumption, from anything from property ownership to standard sales taxes, the idea is more palatable because the taxation at that point is somewhat voluntary.
