The board that Tim Curran rode in the Pipe Masters (or at least that's what the Transworld caption says);

Yeah, but the way I heard it, he spun out, tracked, went slow, couldn’t do hard rail turns, went too fast and couldn’t stay in the tube, was only able to ride thin point waves, was tail heavy, only worked in hollow tubes and received death threats from his sander.

Stupid retro surfboards.

Hey GWS, you going to be around Sunday, January 16th? I'm going to be in Ventura that weekend, meeting my parents. Let me know if you're down for a surf.

Too soon to tell, but if I can swing it, I'd love to meet you for a surf. Remind me when the time is nigh.

Jeez, not only that but you can't pull air at pipe with glass ons. Everyone knows that.

I wonder if Malcon made that one.

So is it the fins that make it a bonzer? I don't notice the deep concaves that I've seen on other Bonzers.

How would a standard single to double concave work with the bonzer5 fin set-up.
duncan sez that the 5fin system works well on any board. i was gonna retrofit one of my boards with it, but im too lazy to do it <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/socrazy.gif" alt="" />

Center fin is twisted, no? Is that an artifact of the photo angle? My flex type fins do that. Weird.

FWIW, I have been informed that Taylor Knox actually rode that board in the Pipe Masters.

I have been further informed that Curran does actually have a few five finners. I was not informed what Curran actually rode at the Pipe contest, but I am 100% certain if it was a bonzer my informant would have told me.

Taylor lives a few miles from me, and surfs my home break in carlsbad. I saw him do the sickest under the lip/tail slide combo out there on a bonzer like 7 years ago. When he came in, I asked him if he thought the bonzers were stiff. He said "stiff?, if anything they are too loose. I'm gonna move the fin back in the box a little. Did you see my last wave?" I said yeah Taylor...I saw it.

He said "well, was that a trick question you asked me?" <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" />

Yep Tim Curran likes bonzers, I saw a load of Casey McCrystal Bonzers at his glassers a couple of years ago shaped for him.

That started when Casey and Malcolm were working out of the same building.

I never saw Tim surf the boards, but word was he was tearing hard. Sometimes. Most of the time he was tracking, going very slow, spinning out and the boards didn't work in mushy waves. Or hollow waves. And they were tail-heavy. That's what I heard anyway.

The board that Tim Curran rode in the Pipe Masters (or at least that's what the Transworld caption says);

this board was originally a truster with glass-ons that malcom sawed off himself. its 5 fin but with out the traditional bonzer channels as you can already see.

Duncan Campbell did the retro-fitting on the North Shore.

blakestah..so then that board does not represent a true "bonzer" ??? your post at Swaylocks "I was told by Duncan Campbell not to even bother trying the Campbell Bros boards owned by one local here - said they did not represent a "bonzer". They had the bonzer 5 fin set up made by Malcolm, but lacked the concaves." ???

bonzer fins but not bonzer bottom contours....

bonzer fins will make any board better, according to some bonzer proponents.

But yeah, I was told, by one of the brothers, that the boards of one SF local, a whole bunch of Campbell Bros 5 finners, did not represent a true bonzer. The bottom contours had not been left up to the shaper.

Actually, it'd be kinda interesting to ride the same board with and without the bottom contours...

I think that board is/was a merrick tri plane hull (probably on an MG or MSG template). Thats what the logo on the bottom is. It has deep single to double concaves that don't release to the rail. Thats pretty darn close to one of MC's bottoms.

Bygones, people.

So....what can we deduce from the fact TWO pros, out of at least 32, chose to ride Bonzers at Pipe?
I'd BET at least 2 Pros chose to ride single fins.
Which leaves 28 Pros NOT riding single fins or Bonzers!
Well, I'd think more than 2 rode singles <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />
Maybe ONE rode a quad?
Not much to make any call, eh?

Actually, if we use a cause and effect.....
I would choose to ride a correctly shaped and sized Bonzer for waves like Pipe, Hanalei, T-poo, Lani, Velzy.....
I would NOT choose one for 4 mile, Wiamea, Queens, DHead, Bolinas, or Ft.Point. Or OB!
Yes for Blacks, and Newbs, no for Abbs, SAbbs, Chasms, or Subs.
In SC, yes for Mitchells, big ESide, and Stockton.....NO, for MiddlePeak, Slot, PP, NB's.
Since I carry ONE board to SC, I'd have to choose, eh?
