I have an article from an old surfer mag that said a few things like:
- go to the cutest person
- dress well
- tell them you already payed
- tell them your a college student and dont have the money this time, but you will next
- if all else fails: cry like a baby

But it seems like people still get charged quite often.

Do you guys have any advice/tips/secrets for not paying for shipping your board?

If you do(id appreciate it greatly), either:

Only check in your board bag and explain thats it, as far as check in luggage goes. Works about 50% of the time. Then cram the essentials in your backpack and carry it on. Always take the minimum, give away what you dont need to the locals and come back with cool foreign *****. uh stuff

He was trying to tell you not to bring another bag for clothes. Just stuff your board bag full of all your stuff and check it. Keep your ID and other important stuff in a backpack with you on the plane.

Always go to a bell cap, never the luggage counter. Show him your ticket with a $20 obviously placed and ask if he can help you get your board (not boards) on the plane. Works every time and its way cheaper than the $95 they're getting each way these days, although I beleive Jet Blue only charges $45.

ok.
but isnt luggage part of ur ticket?
and surfboards are extra...
so wouldnt i still be paying even if the boardbag was the only luggage being sent? (besides i have the carry-on bag)
it would also be a lot heavier with all that stuff in it.

Yeah it only works half the time but make sure and plead your case. "Hey, I'm allowed two pieces of baggage but all I have is this one. I know it's alittle big but thats all I got. So there is no charge, right? By the way you got beautiful eyes blah, blah blah......" Distraction is your friend. Keep your stuff your bringing to the BARE minimum, you will be amazed at what you can get along with out or buy there cheaper.

They get you no matter what these days... I had to pay the last fout trips i've been on, checking only my board.. so you might as well just bring another piece of luggage and check it in too!!! I tried all the techniques from making my board bag as light as possible to flirting w/the pretty ladies... maybe i'm just not lucky..it may be the airline your flying too <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shrug.gif" alt="" />

In the 90's, I was about 80% successful in free check-in for my boards. Since 9/11, it seems airlines are much tighter when it comes to over-sized luggage. With these airlines having financial problems, I doubt they'll let up. I think you'll have better success if you are traveling to 3rd world countries like the Philippines, etc. I've gotten free checkin there but that was also in the 90's. My last trip to Hawaii cost me $160 roundtrip. my solution: don't bring boards. Buy when you get there.

This move was a staple in my travel arsenal for a long time. $20 may have worked in NJ but at LAX $50-$80 was typically the going rate for 2 boards and the remaining check in bags.

As someone previously mentioned this hasn't worked much since 9/11. However, I just returned from a trip to Hawaii and while checking in the with the SkyCap with Delta at the curb, I'm pretty sure this could have worked (although I had no boards). I still would have been stuck paying interisland and for the return trip...

WTF?????? How the hell do u get a plane ticket ROUNDtrip foer 160 dollars? AND to HAWAII FOR THAT MATTER??? cheapest i can find for like costa rica is 600 dollars! and i can plan for the ticket to be a year ahead.. it still doesnt make a difference.
how the heck do u get plane tickets for that price??

also why would u buy a board if your only gonna be somewhere for a week or 2? ud have to throw it away afterwards

1) $160 was the price he paid JUST For the board roundtrip, the price of his ticket is another history

also why would u buy a board if your only gonna be somewhere for a week or 2? ud have to throw it away afterwards
2)if u buy a board somewhere else, then u avoid paying 2 times for an oversized luggage. the idea is that if ur going to a place where boards are much cheaper than the US, then it would be great to get a board half price.

exaple: if u went to brazil a used board would cost around $100 dolla, which is only $20 dolla more than what ud have paid for ur board one way.

I guess then u could surf all out...... and not have to worry about it breaking (except u wouldnt want it to break till the last day of ur trip lol.)
