What is a hotcoat? Like what are the things you mix to make it?

you can buy premixed hotcoat resin.

hotcoat resin is not as strong as regular lam resin because of the agent in it to help sanding.

edit: after reading your post again i just wanted to answer "what is a hotcoat"

hotcoat is a layer of resin that is brushed onto the already laminated board. it preps it for sanding. to thin of a hotcoat and you will have snadthrus and see weave..to thick and the board heavy

They usually call it Sanding resin or gloss coat. when you buy it from a foam/surf shop. Sanding resin is for shortboards, gloss coat is the fancy shinny stuff for longboards and fish.

Ha didnt know styrene was what made it easy to sand. Someone told me wax is added. Dont some laminators mix their own?

Lam is the basic resin.
Add wax, get hotcoat or sanding resin.
Gloss is the styrene thinned, less than 1/2 the viscousity of hotcoat resin, for running out clean and smooth.

Styrene is not a waxy substance.

Wax is added to lam resin to make it hot coat. The hotcoat layer sands more easily with wax added.

Styrene is a generic polyester resin thinning agent.

Dave, please come back to the surf prediction sites!
Did you surf OB on Friday? Heard some out, tough paddle, maybe too big for this old fart.
My 5 week old 8'er is still virgin (to me), not having seen water yet.
It's getting close, just need some rainstorms to cool the valleys, making for offshores

See, Donald, what you miss by not glassing your own boards?
More knowledge can't really hurt your overall surfing skills, and knowledge of surfboard building is not foo foo color design exercises.

Oh, then SORRY!
Being more shaper than glasser, I like the form/function part of the equation over the looks/beauty factor.
Like you, I'm more the arTIST, rather than the engineer.

Always wondered what styrene is. I remember reading that a tanker full of it sunk off the coast of Greece or something. All this talk about hotcoat makes me want to glass.

Surfed the south end Thursday and Friday. Testing out the 6'6" on the bigger stuff. I'd definitely prefer something about a foot longer, although the board did better than I expected. The paddle was inconsequential. Maybe 10 minutes. Left the board with your old co-worker Dave for the next 4 days - ask him about it.

If you want that 8 footer to get broken in, you can drop it off next time swell comes up, I'll be happy to oblige.

I'll be out at 10AM Tuesday...
Seems it was a little tide bumped and still kinda raw today MondayAM.
Prolly want to try it in just overhead outside stuff before I can trust it in real surf.
Seems kinda thin for this old fart.
Gotta work this PM, so can't catch the outgoing N end tides....
