You can get around in Bali pretty good just speaking English. If your there long enough you can take classes. The easiest way to learn is just to avoid hanging out with tourists. A void in your stomach or pressure in your bladder or loins is the best motivator for language study.
Indonesian Malay is easier to learn than Esperanto, no gender no verbs to conjugate and WYSIWYS (what you see is what you say) spelling. The only complicated part is generating adjectives. Your rational mind will tell you ke-malu-an is "embarassment" but your experience will tell you it means 'genitals' And don't confuse the popular balinese name ketut with kentut.
I don't think phrase books are very usefull myself, too static. For anyone who wants to study the language this one is very good "Bahasa Indonesia: Book 1 : Introduction to Indonesian Language and Culture (Bahasa Indonesia)" by Yohani Johns. No tapes but it helps you build grammar and vocabulary.
oh and don't say "Sudah kenyang" when a Balinese person offers you food, unless they are an attractive girl <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
