Finished the Ghost Wave audio book from Audible.com last week. Very good!
Chris, your decision to narrate yourself was the right one. Not crazy about a book read by anyone other than the author because they aren't able to convey the emotion or feeling as well as the author. The unedited portions were a nice touch. Made it more authentic.
The section dealing the pre-history of the area and also the anthropological info on the local Native Americans gave me a better understanding of this part of the California coastline.
It was also really cool to hear some names of guys who were the older guys in the neighborhood whom I looked up to while growing up. It reminded me how significant Southern California's influences have affected surf culture and pushed the limits of our sport.
Great job Chris! Can't wait for your next one!

Dang, thanks Firebird.
I was stoked that Audible asked me to read it. Apparently they don't always do that. I havent even had a chance to listen to the whole thing yet, but I gotta say, it's weird to hear myself quote other people.
I'm thinking a book about Bishop Rock founder Arcibald Macrae might be in order. Greatest unknown antebellum hellman adventurer Wilmington, NC ever spawned. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

author's don't usually get to read their own stuff on audio books because they're not as good as professional voice actors. not so critical with non-fiction, imo, but a good reader can make or break an fiction audio book.

So I just finally listened to the end of the Audiobook. I was fairly surprised to discover that Audible didn't include the Afterward, which was an entire chapter about the paddle surfing missions to Cortes that I went on with Long, Healey, Mel, Slater and the boys. Two of 'em. I nearly got killed on the first. WTF?
If any of you guys who had the audiobook want it in PDF form, shoot me a note and I'll send it your way. Going to have a little chat with my editor.

i really liked Ghost Wave. I listened to the audiobook. i am really picky about audiobook readings and agree that they can make or break a book. i have a long commute and burn through audiobooks very quickly. the content of ghost wave made the book easy to listen too. i am generally not much of a fan of authors reading their own books...there's a reason actors play roles, directors direct, and writers write...rarely does one do it all well.
i am looking forward to chris's next project!!
i will very likely buy the paper version of ghost wave and read it too!!
thanks chris!!
on another note...i really don't like audible. i hope another company comes along that does the audiobook thing better. bummer they left out a piece!
