If you experienced it, you would understand how challenging and debilitating these types of problems can be.
I'd say you don't know what I have/haven't experienced.

I 100% empathize with his situation.

Instead of acknowledging his fear publicly, he confirmed pulls fake injury cards and fakes illness. Avoidant behavior. As an athlete in dereliction of duty he mockingly talks down responsive fans.

His situation is not special (everyone is scared, some even terrified out there, spending years actively getting over their fear) it's known he's not making the full effort, and the WSL system has made it worse. He knows he can flee at Chopes and now Pipe because Trestles (a baby wave that should not be where a World Champ is chosen) will be his saving grace.

If anything the WSL is more at fault as an enabler.

The WSL is a joke. If the person who 'wins' it doesn't like to surf scary waves, so what.
Surf contests are about excitement and sick waves, not mushburgers in Florida or ankle-high Japan.

With that comes high degree of danger, with greater risk rewarded with higher scores.

If you are going to be WSL surfer, World Champ for that matter, you should embrace it.

If he wants to be respected and remembered as a great surfer, he needs to work on this. He doesn't have to. Probably won't. He's already pretty rich so if being respected outside of his inner circle doesn't matter to him, so be it. But he's gonna have to take the heat, and I'm will be trolling him from the front row seats! :monkey:
If that is what you are into...whatever.

There is nothing better than someone overcoming their own fears. That win compared to what others think, their place in surfing history, and judgements by people is so much greater than anything the WSL or its fans can offer.

People off themselves for much less; being vicious over petty concerns is gross.

That's a lot of speculation and projection.

When you own the WSL then you can decide what is or isn't.

this. doesn’t seem to want it deep down and certainly doesn’t need it with the current format.

olympics will be :porcorn:
It's a 4 day waiting period. He's probably gonna win with turns and airs and even an odd small barrel. It's gonna take a lot of luck for this olympic event not be a joke... not even the best season either.

Poor Filipe, gets paid ridiculous amounts of money to surf all over the world, must be a drag. His feelings are too precious to hurt. Consider the critique do be an incentive.

I don't think he made this up. He probably had the runs, but I don't think it was food poisoning (what was he eating that no one else ate?).

I think his fear manifested as a diarrhea. It's no joke, the gut has 500 million neurons connected to the brain by the nervous system, getting the runs out of fear is an actual thing.

That was my thought too.

I can remember Curren saying when he was younger he sh!t his wetsuit on a big day at HB pier...Curren was never a Pipe specialist nor a total charger in the grand scheme of surfing, and nobody thinks less of him for it.

If Pip came out and just admitted his fear (instead of his dad running defense) it would be huge step in the right direction for him.

WSL makes it difficult though, due to their format. "World Champ flees sick pits, still takes (another) title at Lowers" seems illegitimate.

reminds me of cj hobgood calling out surfers being too scared to surf in Tahiti on the big swell around 10yrs back.

found this article looking for it:

from the above article:

It was with that penalty in mind that I emailed Hobgood later to follow up on our dropped call and press him on exactly how much fear the forecast inspires.

His reply: “3 poops a day.”

Epic.

The misconception is always that these guys aren't scared.

They are often scared.

Wasn't there a year where they decided to run a competition at huge Waimea? Started Ross Clark-Jones' career as a big wave surfer but at least one guy refused to paddle out.

Yes, but his focus was never surfing heaving, shallow reef cylinders.

I'm guessing there's a reason for that.

The guy's best known feat at Backdoor was the famous cutback...how many others can say that?

Hawaii is the proving ground. Many go, prove, and flee. Often it's a sponsor requirement.

which contest was it that they called it off and a bunch of guys went out and got waves of their lives so they kept the webcast and booth online?

that one was epic.
