Fiji 101

I'm studying abroad in Australia from Feb-July and then on the way home I'm stopping in Fiji for a week. I've been trying to put together some way to go surfing and check out the nice beaches in a short amount of time. I'm flying into Nadi International Airport. From what I gather, Nadi is heavily tourist oriented, but a good starting point for the rest of Fiji.

The good breaks around Tavarua and Namotu seem only feasible if you're staying at one of the resorts. Otherwise you have to hire a boat from the mainland. Also it sounds like the beaches around Nadi are muddy/not that nice. Further south around Natadola they are a bit nicer and theres some surfing spots.

What I'm getting at is has anyone been to Fiji (SP?) and where did you stay (island resorts, or mainland)? I'm only there for 6 nights and 7 days so I'm trying to get some solid surfing in while also trying to see the sites of Fiji.

note: yes I searched

If you are going by yourself and want a cheap place to stay with decent accomidations. Stay at the Seashell Cove Resort. The have a travelling surfer package. The will put you up, feed you three meals a day(if needed), and take you out to Wilkes, Minicloudbreak, Lighthouse rights and other breaks everyday for as long as you wish to surf. You might have to pay for a second go out on the boat. You might even get to surf Cloudbreak or Nomotu on a Saturday(if you are lucky). If you go, say "Bula" to Simo for me. try www.seashellresort.com

On the mainland there are few options. I have heard of surf at Natadola, but I wouldn't bet on it. There is actually a fun wave outside of the Hideaway resort, but make sure you go on a high tide early in the morning (or whenever else there is no wind). You can go to Seashell, like the other guy wrote, but I have done that, and had a much better time surfing Frigates from Batiluva Surf camp. Seashell will take you to Wilkes and other crappy passes, not worth your time (unless you are able to go to cloudbreak on the day tavarua switches over). For Batiluva to surf frigates, you do need to take a skiff out there, but the rates are pretty reasonable, the food is ridiculously good, and the surf if insane. Its not the supermodel that Tavarua is, but certainly it's prom-queen quality little sister. I understand you can actually stay on the mainland and surf Frigates as well, but I loved Batiluva for the isolation, the local staff (for the most part) and the food.

Anyone else got any Fiji experience? I'm going at the end of March, and plan to stay at Seashell. Anybody else ever stay there? I wrote them a couple of emails already, but haven't heard back.

On a related note, how much does your boardbag with 3 boards packed in it weigh? Korean Air only allows 20kg (45lbs) of checked baggage, and it's $40 PER KILOGRAM (2.2lbs) in excess of that... Over by 22 lbs and it's a $400 board fee

I just traveled with my boards to California from Atlanta. Took 3 boards in a board bag packed with padding (bubble wrap, insulation tubing, a sleeping bag, and a fullsuit). It was around 40lbs and on the way back I only brought back 2 boards (left 1 behind) and the bag was 25lbs. do ***NOT*** pack your clothes in your board bag as it'll make it heavier. You should be fine based on what you posted.

If you need help on how to pack a board bag, see this thread.

Thanks diro. I should be alright then. My boardbag (Destination) is a little heavy, but I won't be bringing a wetsuit . I use the insulating tubing on the rails, a layer of bubble wrap, then a layer of cardboard. Will put everything else in my carry-on, and I should be fine. If 3 bags puts me over the limit, I'll have to leave the 7'6 at home.
