I went there two years ago, and stayed there for 15 days. First of all, you can't just go wherever you want if you're planning on leaving some clothes behind (they will be gone when you get back) Also there is extreme poverty outside the hotel areas (which are guarded by armed guards), so I have to admit I didn't go explore the entire island. But I have seen a lot of the beach though, and during those two weeks there was no wave-surfing possible (no waves, just tiny ones, but waay too small for wavesurf, but really good ones for skimboarding!), I did enjoy learning windsurfing .. I also went diving and that was another great adventure hehe. We went in September, the last two weeks of September, and we had no waves (just before we arrived, a tornado passed though, but we missed that, luckily). The nice thing is that there is this insane reef break way out in the back which gives a sense of security that the big fish stay away ^^ (First day I arrived, a small shark corpse beached, lol, I was stressing when I went surfing, I must admit). Other then that though, we might just have been at the wrong side of the island .. I definately checked out our coastline when renting a katamaran, e checked that entire side, and nothing there to surf. The thing is, I can't remembver what the place as called .. I think it was .. Punta Cana? Best vacation of the last decade for me though, absolutely beautiful.

Visser was on the wrong coast.

the Dominican Republic gets waves just as often as Puerto Rico, which is pretty consistent and high-quality.

They had an article on the Dominican Republic in Surfer or Surfing Magazine a few months back.

I figured, because the island looks like a pretty good spot on the globe to get good waves, that's why we took the katamaran to go explore ^^ Beatiful blue/transparent water, great wheater, supreme beaches, it was still heaven on earth

Yeah but he (Visser) still might have caught a 15-day period when there was no swell pushing through. Although if you're not sure what coast you were on Visser, you sound a little clueless! Sorry

Yeah, DR was also featured in longboard mag a while back. Good waves etc. They didn't mention the armed guards and stuff, but I've heard that can be a bit of a problem.

Well clueless when it comes to wavesurfing yes, I only recently picked the sport up. We just looked for a hotel that offered wind-surfing and diving + excellent accomodation and we sure got that I really couldn't care less where exactly on the beach the hotel would be, as long as there was sun + girls + beach + windsurf + diving! At the time I knew where it was on the map of the island, now I only remember where the island is on the world map ^^

Yes there is poverty here, but not extreme.
As for the armed guards. that's mostly at the all inclusive hotels, where they want to give the guests the impression that if you leave the premises you risk your life.
Basically they want the guests to spend all their $$ in the hotel. I have lived here for over a year now, and have yet to see anything bad happen. In fact I feel safer here than in Amsterdam, NL. Where I also lived for 2,5 years.
