is there any way to know what size you need to order online without ordering the fitting kit first? besides just going around looking for surf shopes that have them?

Not really. You have to hit the shops and decide on your size. Once you know your size you can order at will off the internet.

Of course you could just guess and deal with the consequences: Tight or loose plugs or maybe just right.
