If where you live has really gutless waves like the ones in Japan (except for typhoon season). Then yes! Makes you way more stoked on the small days.

Unless every day with waves where you live is over waist high then yes you do need something long that has glide. You can go glider, noserider or “hi pro” longboard ( yuck) depending on the “feels” you want.

IMHO true waist high ( not “Hawaiian” 2ft) and under, its the only thing that unlocks the fun. In those waves even a “groveller” doesn’t work as well unless you are very quick and light on your feet, and even then you are missing out on the feeling of glide. ( bear in mind that a lot of the videos of expel demoing grovel boards are on days with a chest to shoulder high face and some energy)

Plus learning to ride a longboard “properly” opens up more days to surf, you learn stuff about where you can get speed in a wave that other boards don’t teach you. Plus arguably it can smooth out your style for smaller boards.

ps nose riding is hella fun and nothing else in surfing feels quite like it…..

ppps…
