What I've noticed is that when the high end stores like Sprouts or Whole Foods move in, the low-margin guys like Ralphs or Albertsons often go lowball and let their stores just deteriorate.

TJ's is the odd man out, as their prices are generally low but the shopping experience is quite good.

The Ralph’s near me is a basically a homeless shelter.

TJs can charge less because of their private label products. Better margins on the product, less SKUs to stock and minimal competition for their own products. Whereas Albertsons et al is trying to cater to literally every kind of shopper.

Oddly enough, the Albertsons near me has a more extensive and arguably better produce section than Whole Foods. It's the only thing they're good at. Trader Joes is probably the worst for produce, they make a point of buying lower USDA grade produce that is also certified organic so people think they are getting a deal.

Probably dropping in on you, California
I always shop Ralph’s but my grocery needs are relatively simple. I’ll go to Sprouts or Whole Foods for the odd specific item now and again but I’m not a fan of TJ’s whatsoever.
The quality of Ralph’s stores are very hit or miss tho. Some feel like a pavilions and are nice and some are like homeless shelters like Duffy said. Either way pay these mofos whatever they want.

-Grocery store workers get paid pretty well for low/no skilled labor and have plenty of opportunities to advance their carreers.

-Last I checked it wasn’t “corporate policy“ mandating masks in Californi, it was Gavin Newsom (by fiat).

-Rates of covid infection for grocery store workers (TJ’s in the link) are not significantly different than the rest of the communities in which the stores operate....

the 'corporate' policies i'm referring to often ask their employees to enforce this mask mandate within stores

what career advancement opportunities are available for a large % of grocery store employees?

that link provides mostly useless information.

either way - i still believe that if we all agree that Americans need a way to purchase food and we want people to work in stores in order to facilitate this and that we are still within the parameters of our wacky vaccine prioritization for certain groups than grocery workers should get vaccinated

who else is supposed to do it?

whatever percent puts in the work and possesses the aptitude.

grocery store workers are no more likely to contract covid than the general population.

Again, grocery store workers are no more likely to contract covid than the general population so there’s no data derived justification for prioritizing their vaccination.

On that subject, we should be vaccinating as many people as we can in the fastest way possible, however that plays out.

I worked at Vons for 6 years, from 1989-1995, in Santa Barbara (Turnpike, then downtown on Chapala, with a couple stints at Fairview and Montecito) ( I was 17-23 at the time), then Lucky's from 1995-1997 in Santa Cruz (41st, and Soquel midtown). I can say with certainty there is little room to advance one's career, especially if you are a woman. If you are female, and very lucky, you will get out without having to be forced into watching some idiot manager masturbate in the deli/dairy box. Look around in the rafters and you will find actual paper porno mags like Cher, Oui, &c.

If you are very lucky you might be offered a full ride through USC Supermarket Management degree.

Basically, unless you can move up to (non-represented) mgmt, there's nowhere to go.

Enjoy your yogurt.
