Crusty,
I didn't know I was the enemy. I guess you won't be buying anymore leashes, wax combs, fins, wetsuits, cars, bikes, skateboards, even your surfboards...as a matter of fact just about every material item in your life is affected in someway by petro-chemicals.

nep beat me to the punch. Plastic is so ingrained into almost every facet of our modern lives, that in some situations, people would literally die without it. The hope is that oil should only be used for it, and not for fuels. There are biodegradable plastics being used for packaging, but they're are not strong enough (yet) for structural use. Your surfboard is a 100% oil based product minus the stringer, which takes a trees life to make. So, in reality, your surfboard is probably the more enviromentally incorrect than your car. Chew on that for a while.

the fact that our lives are totally based on a petro-chem economy does not make the petro-chem economy right.
in fact, that just makes me hate it even more.
i would GLADLY trade my plastic surfboard in for clean oceans to BODY surf in (without fins)
One word...plastics.
Using oil to make stuff is okay. The shame is to burn all that resource into the air for fuel in this day and age. Everytime I fill up my tank I think, "Gee, all this stuff could have been made into a life saving medical device or a cool clock or something."

I'm gonna go to Costco and show them my plastic ID card to gain entrance. Then I'm going to grab one of those big plastic red kiddy slides and walk to the cashier. Next, I'll take a different plastic card out of my plastic wallet and swipe it through that plastic mechanism with the magnetic strip and pay for the big plastic sucker. Then I'll drive drive home with the big plastic slide sitting on my plastic bedliner, while I steer my truck with it's plastic steering wheel, accelerate the entire time by pressing the plastic soles of my shoes against the plastic cover on the gas pedal. I'll then put the slide in my room, throw a Big Red Plastic Slide party, complete with drinks and cake, respecively in and on plastic cups and plates. We'll drink and eat using plastic straws, forks and knives. When the party's over everything will get tossed in plastic trash bags and thrown in plastic trash cans the morning after. Plastic inside of plastic inside of plastic yes, with a plastic lid. I'll repeat the plastic entry process at Costco, return the big plastic slide, and eat a free sample of Wild Mountain Tamale Co. frozen tamales (that taste like plastic), served in one of those little plastic cups, eaten with a tiny plastic spoon.

Actually tri fins,
Crude oil is made up of many variations of proportions of lighter and heavier grades of oil. The lighter grades are primarily used for solvents and fuels. While the heavier grades are chemically altered to form the various plastics and other bi-products. That's what refineries are for.

Well Crusty I'm not going to pull an Al Gore and claim to have caused the "Plastic Economy". But, as someone who is constantly thinking up new ways that plastic can help to overcome needs in the market place, I am not reducing the amount of plastic that we use around us. Everyday we squeeze plastic into holes to create components for many of the items I mentioned above.

Nep,
The balsa boards are coated with polyester resin. The old redwoods were coated with laquer based varnish. You would have to go back to the original Hawaiian Koa boards to get away from Hydrocarbons.

OK, TFAD, I maybe was getting a little carried away there. But you have to admit, surfboards are total enviromental catastrophes, when it comes to materials, production, and recycling. But hey, as long as we wear our hemp clothing, we can balance the worlds impact.

What about hemp oil? Plastics can be made from hemp. Henry Ford made an entire car body out of hemp plastic! It didn't catch on though... in an accident it would shatter, not deform.

There is a sci-fi novel that came out a few years ago about an oil eating engineered bacteria used to clean up an oil spill mutates and quickly depletes the world of plastic, plunging the world back into the dark ages. I'm having trouble finding it on my searches since I can't recall the author or name of the book.
Little help?
