I think I was trying to work out whether I could cheat my way to more waves with a step up like the Round Up, even at the cost of a bit of performance. Doesn't look like it will work out?

I think i'll go with one of the many local options (JS, DHD, Bourton, Stacey, etc.) for a standard shortie. Currently looking at something from stacey:
http://www.staceysurf.com/store/surfboards/all-round-surfboards/zombie-wolf
http://www.staceysurf.com/store/surfboards/all-round-surfboards/machine-head

I might also grab something alternative like a Bonzer or something from NPJ or Gary McNeill with a bit more volume or something. Have to look into it.

Cheers for your help everyone.

I think you have sorted it. Get a board from a shaper that surfs/designs for your waves - stacey's boards are great. And yes a McNeill CV2 is epic as are NPJ's - although pricey.

cant say enough good things about Muzz Bourton...head to factory in currumbin and have a meeting with him and he will sort you out. Boards are done fast and he uses diagonal glassing which is awesome. Im currently using the silver bullet and use it in most everything here on the goldy

for punchy beachbreaks I'd go for the most reactive equipment possible. Minimum volume high performance, rockered out shortboards.

If punchy, but lined up....might look at a quad- set up.

My buzz saw was good for shore break type waves

Heavy barrels late drops

B5fin has it and is trying to sell I think

G'day guys,

I'm currently looking for a board that would suit hollow punchy beachies which I have been surfing recently. It doesn't necessarily have to suit bigger waves anywhere between waist to slightly overhead (Aus 3-5 ft). want something that paddles really well so I can sit out a bit further when it's crowded and get in early, make critical drops and maximise tube time. If it can allow me to get some nice hacks in as well all the better.

I have plenty of boards for fatter days and smaller/weaker conditions and grovelling.

Currently I'm thinking:
Lost Round Up (2" and 3 ltrs more than my DD)
Lost Tube Pig
JS Monsta 6 (1 size larger)
jS FMN
DHD DX1
Hypto Krypto

Any recommendations or feedback on the above?

Cheers
cut the sh!t and go see brian bulkley!
