I had a project in Jo Berg in early 1980s. Jo Berg was one of, if not the safest cities on the entire African Continent. This was during apartheid. My first trip to South Africa was in 2012. Johannesburg is a shocking place. It leaves you with the impression that business and ordinary people are leaving downtown and the city is building a wall around it.
First night there, I'm leaving a meeting and the guy I'm with gets a phone call. I can tell something is wrong and when he hangs up he tells me that his friend was just robbed and it's right nearby. He said he could drop me at the hotel or I could go with him. I didn't want to make him drive me all the way to the hotel so I said it's fine and lets go help his friend. We get there and the living room is covered in blood. The robbers tied him and his wife up and beat them with a pistol. They were able to untie themselves after some time and called the police. We showed up 45 minutes after they called the police and they still hadn't arrived. It took altogether about two hours for them to get there. The process seemed a lot like reporting a stolen car, very routine. I'm taking all this in, not saying anything and just tripping at how surreal it is. One of the police officers starts talking to me, I tell him I'm from the US, where apparently all his family has moved. We start talking and he tells me that unless someone dies they don;t do much and this happens all day and all night every day. Every house, every neighborhood is like a compound with barb wire and high walls, cameras and gates. Johannesburg is a weird and in some areas a pretty scary place. My next stop was Cape Town, which is one of the most beautiful places on earth.
My friend visited in the 80's and said it was killer. Back then they knew how to run the city. I tried to save money to meet him there, but when I lost my jobI was cut off at the knees.I had a project in Jo Berg in early 1980s.
