I have fond memories of Blackies.
Back in 1972, I lived for a summer in Costa Mesa/Newport as a friend needed a roomate to help with the rent and I was just a gung/ho surfer who just graduated from High School. I had no money and I was getting over mono. I was living on a 10 pound sack of rice that I bought at Costco and I turned into a skinny twig.
Walking on the boardwalk, I met another friend who's parents owned a summer home on Balboa Island. He was astonished at my physical condition. He told me that he would take me out to dinner to anyplace I wanted. All I could think of was Blackies, even though I had never been inside the place.
He got me loaded on herb and we walked in. I was so far gone I was almost face planted on the table. The waitress came over and asked me what I wanted. I remember looking up at her and mumbling "Charlie's Chili". She just laughed and said "One bowl of chili coming up". To this day, my friend still reminds me of this scene.
