Where in the Constitution is the presidential power to pay off huge personal debts with our money?

Biden is about to commit an impeachable offense

Aug 23, 2022
.....President Joe Biden is about to blatantly break the law to “cancel” thousands of dollars of student loan debt accrued by some of the most privileged members of society. Of course, nothing will actually be canceled. Instead, the government will simply be out that money, and the burden of those debts will be transferred from those who accrued them to hundreds of millions of taxpayers who didn’t.

The White House will announce on Wednesday the cancellation of up to $10,000 in student loan debt for for borrowers who make less than $125,000, a source familiar with the plans confirms to CNN https://t.co/rhtbhEefrI
— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) August 23, 2022

It’s a disgusting, immoral move to tell a janitor making $40,000 a year that he must now foot the bill for college-educated Americans with far brighter employment prospects while receiving absolutely nothing in return. Past that, there are the overall economic concerns. What do you think is going to happen to inflation if millions of people are suddenly relieved of $10,000 in debt for no other reason than it existing?

But as I said in the first sentence of this article, the biggest issue here is that what Biden is set to do is illegal. There is no federal provision that allows him to “forgive” student loan debt on the backs of taxpayers via the stroke of his pen. Nancy Pelosi is on record saying Biden doesn’t have that power. The Department of Education has said Biden doesn’t have that power. For the president to still attempt this move wouldn’t just be a pushing of the envelope. Rather, it would be a conscious, deliberate decision to commit an impeachable offense.....

i personally think its a horrible time to be giving any one free money for anything. or at the very least - dont talk about it, people are already pissed.

it would however be nice to see a politician deliver a campaign promise for once, just dont think this is the one.

on the other hand, if you've paid back an amount equivalent to the original principal plus that same amount in interest, I don't call that giving away free money. i call that predatory lending.

These are personal loans which students sign up for. The money is lent by private banks with the federal government’s guarantee of repayment. Congress has not authorized “forgiveness” of student loans via, you know, a law?

If we choose to use our federal government for sending every momma and pappa’s li’l darling to college then a college education will become worthless in the marketplace, but prohibitively expensive to taxpayers. Everyone will have one.

Companies want higher level employees with the incentive to get things done. We call other people government employees. The thing which will earn you a good paycheck without having proven yourself at a company is the commitment of paying for and earning your own education. If a junior college is free then companies will recruit bachelors’ degrees. If a bachelor’s degree becomes free then companies will recruit masters’ degrees. If masters’ degrees become free then companies will recruit Doctors …..whatever you have to earn yourself.

What a bunch of suckers we are helping pay for our daughter's college so she doesn't have to take out loans.
Kids who go to college as it exists today are mostly suckers (as are the people paying for it)

There's a subset of highly valuable colleges, degrees, networking opportunities but most of what is paid for is waste (unless you love paying for that experience to live on your own in a campus environment)

The debt and loan side is driven by colleges acting as poorly run for profit enterprises, crutched by the easy access of debt by students - encouraged by the government and a society who is slow to push for changes in our education system.

yeah well much of America can't afford it. Not everyone can be a coastal elite like you.
Sounds like much of America has its priorities screwed up. I'm far from being a "coastal elite". Do you think I wouldn't have MORE fun with that money by doing a couple of surf trips with it? I'm sure my son would love to surf Cloudbreak, Tahiti or the Maldives instead of his sister not having student loans.

Forgiving student loan debt will encourage college to remain less affordable for many.

The university system will continue to be able to gouge students.

And do I need to mention the inflation aspect?

This is pretty much an attempt to buy votes at the expense of the country.
