Being part of the cabal quietly running the country isn't enough. US Oligarch purchases and privatizes another 600 acres of land on Kauai.

Is the NFL socialist because the worst team gets the first draft pick, and because a salary cap exists?
Competition can be better for everyone if rules are enforced such that whoever wins initially doesn't then have an exponentially easier task of winning each time after, with no end.
I was kidding. I actually agree, I hate Facebook, it needs to be broken up, in fact I think we should bring back the rule that holds websites responsible for the content on them, thereby getting rid of all social media, this site, and comment sections everywhere. It would be a positive development for society.

I've been kidding at least 2/3 of the time in this post. Though I also don't have or use Facebook/Instagram/etc. I do genuinely loath people who purchase large swaths of land in limited and sought after areas in order to keep the rest of us out, for any reason at all (you hear me Hollister Ranch? I want to see Tahoes lined up a mile past the gate just to spite you dirty fvcks)

ask yourself given the jack if you wouldnt do the same kiddo. been the way of it since before you swam out of your daddys cock.

you like your view? better buy it. how about that little buffer lot between you an the neighbor? better buy it. like that empty open space out the back? yea you get it.

i loathe the zucks because everything but its just a matter of scale.

hollister hoa 100 acre lots when i made regular trips in. lame they allow tenths but its their prerogative i guess if sb didnt enforce the original ccr. seems counter to the exclusivity they are berated over.

around here we all buy up "extra" lots when were able. keeps the population down and the quality of life up. only difference is its crap land few want.

sure you can go cry to the populist regime in sac and theyll help your poor ass out. turn it into a park or some sh!t.

so many comments and only three from residents
people always telling us here what to do with our lives when they don't actually live here
don't see to much of that going the other way across the pacific

we've had paternalistic land owners ever since the beginning some kind and thoughtful some not
but like peter says just give it a rest and worry about your own neck of the woods
we'd be way better off if people who don't come from here quit trying to "make it better"

maybe zuck is adopting this place and finally understanding what makes it "special" to want to do something to keep it that way for awhile. That happens when you "live" here and it starts to become "home" or "a home".

Better than the land getting split among a bunch of warring "decendents" looking to cash out like always. When the land no longer has more value than your "life/lifestyle" you cash out. I guess that's why no one ever stays out in their first home anymore.

So doc here came up with "you would do it if you could", and oneula says "better one rich guy than a bunch of locals who would argue over it"

"it's the same thing as this other thing, on a different scale" is beside the point, rules change as scale changes.

Anyone more creative?

PS give it a rest with the "if you don't live here, don't talk about things that happen here, on the internet" bit. It's tired and the eye roll emoji isn't a "like" button style reply option.

gentrification is not exclusive to hawaii, very sorry to point out.

most islands in the world are just microcosms of the country what "owns" them, ie: stuck a flag in their soil first.

so, what are people who are forced from their homes supposed to do, in lets say, syria. stick it out and die, for community?

my family was run out of spain long ago by imposed poverty, should they have stayed and died? cause of community?

don't get me wrong, i fully understand its importance... but at times, other things are more important, like say for example, quality of life?

as far as only hawaiians having a say on a message board on a topic brought up about one of the wealthiest persons in the world buying land there? do you really think there aren't mark zuckerbergs everywhere? me? i'd welcome a person who purchases land to "preserve their view", for in doing so, they're indirectly conserving said land. there may come a day, due to the logistics of an islands limitations to development that the suckiceberg's "protected view" is one of the few pristine preseved places on the island.

would you be happier if it was a land conservation trust that did this?

here, we have some kook who wants to stick a universal studios type development smack in the middle of a natural sand dunes park, irregardless of the impact to the natural sand flows. local kook authorities hear hollywood and drop their drawers and forget the vaseline.

personally, i wish suckabird, or someone like him, bought it all up and left it untouched to "preserve the view".

in the end, being "right" isn't always the way to get the "best end" sometimes. in this case, his "wrongly viewed" action of buying up huge swaths of land may just keep it from becoming littered with condos and malls and other "right development".

isn't being "wrong" the better alternative? knowing that status quo is not an option?
at least in this case?

the reason everyone who never even visited hawaii talks so much about it is partly because of how the archipelago is viewed, as paradise on earth. there's plenty of other paradise on earth people rarely even mention, nor visit. what i'm trying to say here i guess is that the islands "popularity" are what make them such "word of mouth" for everyone on the internet. run a search on hawaii, then compare the number of "search results" to any other paradisiacal pacific island chain. the results show why they are so visited and talked about... their popularity has inevitably become in some ways their demise.

but that's definitely not exclusive to hawaii. look at bali before it became word of mouth, compared to now.

i pray that hawaii becomes passe soon, "DONE", even... maybe then things can chill out a bit for the islanders when the hordes go off en masse to the next "in" spot. it will cripple a lot of businesses, and families dependant on those businesses, if it does ever go that way though.

the lyric by sting from the pop group the police comes to mind.... "when the world is crumbling down, you make the best of what's still around."

best of luck island brothers from another island mothers.

the land used to be wholely owned by kings(alii class) worked by their servants(makaainana class). Below them were the slaves (manehune)
then the missionaries and others came and got possession by marrying into royalty and passed it on to their decendants.
then the sugar and pine barons took over most of the land and passed it on to their decendants
Then there were the cattle folks on the big island like parker ranch who did the same

The tech folks were next after the boom in 2000 Atari, Lotus etc etc

Actually Zuck's kind of late to the game compared to his peers
Steve Case (old kamaaina family) founder of AOL was one of the first, owns allot on maui and kauai
Larry currently owns lanai but before that it was owned by Dole Foods CEO
Dell owns a huge chunk of the kona coast but his fancy hotel got wasted by the last big tidal wave there
There's a new breed of weathly farm/cattle owners coming to town
One guy bought a chunk of kauai from Case as did Omidyar's (eBay) foundation who's been trying unsuccessully(pollution issue) to start a cattle farm for milk on kauai.
The Tetris guy(Blue Startups) own a huge ranch on the big Island powered by Tesla batteries.
Then there's all the hollywood and rock stars with their hideaway mansions and chinese billionaires and middle eastern sheiks with their mansions on the big island with 9 hole golf courses on them that only spend a week here a year.
This is all a result of "decendants" selling out. No one else to blame as everyone wants their cut before they die. The concept of land is forever has been lost in modern life.

Zuck's only getting attention because he's Zuck, there's allot more that's been going on here for decades that's stays behind the curtain. When it get's out of hand like on Maui or Molokai then the locals like Walter Ritte step in and things get shut down like they did to Molokai Ranch. Real estate and property management are the two biggest employers outside of tourism. everyone's an agent these days.

Facebook’s Zuckerberg Provides Over $4M to Help Kauai
MARCH 8, 2021
Starting today, Kauai businesses can apply to take advantage of a $4,200,000 donation made by Facebook’s Zuckerberg to help Kauai. The money is being donated by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan via their Hawaii Community Foundation fund.
Up to 200 employers and 400 employees stand to benefit from the Rise to Work program, designed to help bring people back to work. This will connect displaced workers with temporary jobs at local employers. Participants in the program receive weekly pay and free health insurance benefits in a program funded for 12 weeks.
Last April, Zuckerberg also donated 1 Million to help three Kauai organizations: Wilcox Medical Center in Lihue, the Hawaii Community Foundation, and Aina Hookupu O Kilauea.

Can someone explain how our children will be able to buy houses near us? I'm not talking about Hawai'i. I'm talking about anywhere. The way this has been working is that the Fed pumps money into the economy which is quickly sucked-up by large corporations, their shareholders (billionaires) and REITs. This money is used to buy property, restricting supply and driving up the price. I haven't even gotten into the foreigners buying houses yet.

Sounds like we're all headed for third-world levels of housing density if we want to live near our kids. They and their families will have to live in the house they grew up in.

Oh well. Most people on here don't have kids (plural).

Tax the large corporations and their billionaire share holders and help out (reduce the tax burden on) the middle and working class?

Politicians won't tax the large C corps. They like to go after what they deem "rich people"......which means S corps and LLC's, which employ 90% of the people in this country and create real wealth for the population get hit the hardest while the millionaire and billionaires pay little to nothing.

It was bound to happen eventually - the superwealthy proliferate exponentially with the growth in population... while land does not.

In the future pretty much everyone will probably rent.

In related news, duh!:

“And everybody has a share.”

The county and state, real estate people, lawyers, maybe some local people for maintenance and stuff, that’s everybody.
