Waldo,

if you don't mind paying a little bit of money, for a lot of good quality reggae, (not to mention a ton of punk and other music) check out e-music.com. They have almost the entire collection of the Shanachie record label, in addition to hundreds of other artists.

I think it costs $30.00 for a 3 or 6 month subscription, but with that, you can download whatever songs you want. The downloads are a much better quality than Kazaa, but the only drawback is that you can only do two at a time. My buddy had it last year and got a ton of music.

I never mind paying a little for quality.
I paid good money for my CD burner and my library card.

Seriously, I'll check out that site, but I've found very few sources like that that are Mac-friendly.

Waldo,
There is so much out there. What has been already listed in previous threads are many of my favorites. I have a huge reggae collection, which I add to far too often (yesterday for instance). If you can get to Lou's Records in Leucadia, you will find more than you may ever need. Two things I do is to always check the used rack and check out compilations. Go to Blood and Fire records web site. They have lots of good stuff. They also have a message board. It is no where near as good as this one, but it is helpful.
Here are a couple of good Compilation/Various artists CD's I recommend.
"This Is Reggae Music" Volumes 1,2&3
"Groove Yard"
"The Harder They Come" soundtrack to the movie. It will be in the Jimmy Cliff section
"Rockers" soundtrack to the movie
"King Kong"
"Heavyweight Sampler" Blood and Fire
Lee Perry's albums feature many various artists.
I suggest that you check out the more independent record shops or Rasta shops as opposed to The Warehouse or the big chains until you know what you want. Also, Amazon.com can be useful, because people like you and me often give reviews of the album you are interested in.

Jah will provide

Yeah Toots! Toots and the Maytals I think it was. I'd forgotten most of this stuff. Used to sneak into bars about 15 years ago to see Third Eye, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, some others. I didn't see Jimmy Cliff up there, but that's OK, I didn't like him as much as some of the stuff you people already mentioned.

I had a link to lots of reggae downloads if I can find it... BRB with it if I can.

good for you Waldo for getting into more reggae...and it will definitely help your mood on the LA freeways.

Gingy Bongo and Otis listed all the great bands. Follow their lists. Anything on Shanancie and the blood and Fire labels are pretty much the roots of reggae and very irie.

go runn dem down....

Not sure if anyone has mentioned The Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs or not.

also

Culture "Production Something"

each track has the reggae song with the version (the dub version of the song) added to it. Words cannot explain the first time you hear a great song and all of a sudden it just turns into a spaced out dub with echoes and claps etc. ohhhhhhhhh, pass me the lighter.

"Culture In Dub" is many of the classics in the dub version. I have it on cassette somewhere, it's CD worthy. I'm gonna look for "Production Something". I'll get back to if I find any info.
Waldo, Culture, The Mighty Diamonds & The Wailing Souls are all must buys.

There are so many.
"The Front Line" is a collection from 1976 that was recently re-released.
I love Big Youth's "Dreadlocks Dread"

Is there always gonna be one more bridge to cross
Black people do we really have to fight?
Do we really, really have to fight?
You see, where I'm from
From the heart of the city, from the ghetto of the city baby,
All I can see is confusion ya'll
Brother 'gainst a brother I would say,
Too much confusion!

You've got to get Big Youth. I feel stoned just thinking about it.

Also, wrt UB40, their first albumn was KILLLER. The one with Ivory Madonna, Tyler, etc...

TharealHB,
Okay, I went to Amazon.com. I didn't realize that "Production Something" was the actual title. Looks pretty good. "Culture In Dub" if you don't have it may be more tracks for your buck. But the way everyone, don't buy it from Amazon without checking the local record shop first. I bought Big Youth "Universal Natty Dread" for half it was listed for on Amazon.com.
Hey! Nobody mentioned U-Roy. He is the creator of DJ music (rap). "Jah Son Of Africa" a MUST!
Shame on all of you that don't have him on your list.

All those bands RIP you guys mentioned, I like Gregory Isaacs, Night Nurse. King Tubby for your Dub Wise, Dr. Alimentado, Best dressed Chicken in Town - It's the Bomb Album. In high school and collage I was really into reggae, I still have all my records, classics! I heard there's a way to burn records onto CD's? Anyone know? Sooooo much music and sooo little time.
