Im going to Bali during June/July with a couple of friends.
We dont realy know anything about Bali beside good surfing and cheap prices.
Where should we stay for the ultimate surf and nighlife?
like that combination
Is there any good sites on the intenet where we can find cheap hotels/ apartments?

Thanks!

Buy one of the following:

1. A used copy of Lonely Planet's "Guide to Bali" ($10?)
2. Indo Surf & Lingo ($25?)
3. Surfing Indonesia ($25)

Check amazon.com for all of the above.

I go every summer. You can stay in Kuta although it is crowded. You can hire a driver to take you out to the breaks everyday. (Ulu, etc) $10 per day is what we paid last year. Trek to G land for 3-4 days if you can. It is epic!

I just updated the SURFER Travel Reports for Indo (five total, including the Bali/G-Land report) I had Peter Nelly's help who lives in Bali (Indo Lingo author).
Check them out in digital full color: http://asp.flipserver.net/primedia/surfermag/

Be careful driving rental cars around, we crashed and it wasn't fun to fix the damages in the Indo heat (plus paying rental owner).

I wouldn't get my hopes up too much about the "skilled" part. I lived in Indonesia for seven years and one thing I learned is that driving skills are not a prerequisite for a driver.

If you can get one who is from Bali, and not an immigrant from another part of the country that helps some. It also helps if he is the cold and heartless kind of driver who won't flinch or swerve into oncoming traffic when he runs over a dog.

I would rather be in a a car with a reckless driver than on the side of the road when one passes, they will be passing you all day long. You can rent a motorbike with a surf rack on it. Bring along a surf helmet to use as head gear.

Don't forget an international license with a motorcycle endorsement. The cops on Bali are pretty dilligent with roadside stops, especially near a holiday.

The hassle of you making a drivers permit, even if its fake, would be less than the hassle of being asked to fork over a million rupiah at a roadside checkpoint.

Get a permit or make something that looks like one if you plan on renting a bike.

I go to Bali every year. Stay in Kuta for the night life and chicks, but blow out during the day and surf around the Bukit. The Bounty Hotel is a great spot
I have used the same driver for the past 6 years. The guys name is Made ( also goes by Elvis). He knows all of the spots, speaks english, and is extremely trust worthy. Charges about 10-15 US per Day.
