sad time.

above are a few pics from a booklet that a.b. wrote the main essay for (where is jack goldstein?) they printed a few thousand, so maybe you could find a copy on ebay if you’re interested...

when a.b. first came to nyc from cal arts he worked for jack as an assistant. he writes about meeting jg when he came to cal arts as a visiting artist and left a bit of an impression on a. i’ve excerpted a couple of pages...

jack came as a visiting artist to my school around the same time. he was definitely cooler than all the other wimps they brought through. lots of fvckyou attitude, where the others were really trying to ingratiate themselves...

essay is funny/sad and well written. it was for a j.g. retrospective @ an ny gallery. goldstein was a cal arts guy as well. he ended up killing himself...

look closely at the last pic above...

a.b. - maybe see you at the save the robots in the sky/hell...

Damn, it was only a matter of time with what he was facing. I hope he got a good laugh at our premature mourning when this thread first started and that he actually got to read some of our words. Also hope he had the strength to enjoy the remainder of the time he had with his family in paradise. Ashley was already a legend in every sense of the word while still alive, that legendary status only gets elevated now that he has left this world. All the best to his wife and children.:beer:

Such heartbreaking news I received this morning regarding Ashley's passing. Goodbye Bali - thank you for the laughs, teaching me about various mediums and how art has no rules. Mostly, thank you for being a quiet supporter. Get some rest brother.

Ashley's comment on 10/13/22: "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

That’s what it takes to bring you back?

I had an interesting conversation with AB several years ago when a kid that was a friend of the family got cut up in pieces. I was ready to beat feet from here. His advice, the kids would make it there 2 and 8 at the time. What wouldn’t have made it is my wife, too much culture difference. He was right.

Good to see you around albeit under distressing circumstances.

What's there to say? He kinda won at life.

Without question Ashley's life was magically, wildly, unattainably aspirational. I mean how many dudes get to make art on their own terms, have had the courage and resources to take complete creative license over their existence, and were lucky enough to surf all the great left tubes in the world before the Nowtimes. Here's to doing it right.

He is six years younger than me. It makes you think.

So horrible that he contracted that disease.

I can’t add much to everything shared, he was such a unique and inspiring and yet somehow such a humble man. there truly was nobody else even remotely like him. Find me a fukking pipeline charger, still charging Bali in his 50s…raised by a master of pidgins and creoles, growing up all over the world, and happened to become of the most cutting edge and forward seeing artists of the last 75 years…oh and also had time and inclination to goof off on a surfing forum with weirdos like us, and even met a number of us IRL over the years. Like, what multi, multi millionaire artist would do that, except one who was a true surfer, a down to earth guy, as well as a true artist. All Intertwined beautifully to his core.

this is morbid but I’m pretty certain he’s the first erBBer that I’ve met IRL to pass away. that is Not sitting well with me right now. As much as I’m thinking of all the adventures, waves, and craziness he must have participated in over the decades, I’m also very sad

Rest In Peace Ashley....
Never met him in person, but I really enjoyed his posts on the erBB and the few interactions we had via email.

your mom
i've said a lot about all the times we ran into each other. meeting django and cherry was a definite treat. seeing his shows, hearing his impossible to nail accent spin yarns about charging pipe leashless on giant days, going to see FEAR and agression with me at cal arts, quips about schnabel, who was a fan of his, making to move to bali, so many stories. i'm just gonna soak this in now. a bit of quiet reflection and to mourn the loss of one of the very few heroes i do believe i have ever had.
rip old friend.
ride free from the pain, and know you were loved.
