Before the erBB, there was alt.surfing, the original online surf community. Unfortunately, Google Groups has this banner on our beloved group's page: https://groups.google.com/g/alt.surfing

"Effective February 22, 2024, Google Groups will no longer support new Usenet content. Posting and subscribing will be disallowed, and new content from Usenet peers will not appear. Viewing and searching of historical data will still be supported as it is done today."

google might stop supporting it but that does not necessarily mean it's going away. Usenet is alive and well otherwise, albeit not so much as a social media resource. the alt.surfing newsgroup will still be out there but you will probably need a Usenet client to access it. not that there's much to access - looks like it was down to a couple of actual surf-related posts per month, maybe less. not much incentive to for others to find others ways to reach it.

irl liked calling the sandman a kook and explaining why

If I really think back to when I first got online, I thought message boards and chat rooms were occupied by people who already knew each other. Similar to walking up to a group of strangers in public who are already having a conversation.
