So i was looking at the surfer travel report for sumba and it says SE trade winds blow onshore on the south coast.

so here is my question, i was looking at a map and it looks like SW swells would wrap in to the streach of coast just north of the islands very west tip. And i would guess SE trades would blow offshore on this same streach. so are there no reefs there? do the winds still hook in? do swells not rap around that point? Just curious I doubt i will be going to sumba on this trip but still this question has been bugging me.

no I haven't

I've been from up north - Sumatra - Java, and then Bali/Lembongan

but next time i really wanna do Bawa, Sumba, timor and/or Roti (seen really good surfers bring qiverd of LOTS of XL surfboards to ROTI ) -and of course - Lombok

so i guess i'm just projecting my fantasy trip on you

but from everything i've head - i can only imagine a trip south and east fromBali is much more user friendly- - ie easy for us dome gringos - than an overland romp from Jakarta to coast and then scouring up/down looking for the best spot-

but then again 3 months is a long time and i don't wanna ssume anything about your travel-easue - and ability to withstand BS

wherever you go - bring the helmet and an open mind

(oh yeh the asussies and kiwis are always impressed with Seppo gadgets like bottled - evaporate away hand sanatizer )

Your only 16 and your parents are letting you go solo for three months in Indo? Don't know where to even begin.

My suggestion for you:
Start drinking a six pack of beer each Friday and Saturday night. You got to build your tollerance up, because all you're going to be doing is hanging out with Aussies that are going to haze the shet out of you if you can't handle your booze. If you can go solo to Indo, I see no problems with pops buying a few six packs.

I went to Bali solo for two weeks and had more fun than I would have with a group of friends, completly different trip. Aussie's generally get a bad rap here from some reason or another. I think they're some of the coolest cats around. You'll run into them everywhere over there. It's there Hawaii. As for Sumba, never been there but some locals out of Cangu in Bali told me about it. That's all I'll say. Get that Emergency Medical Kit from REI, and take lots of Hydrogen peroixide and put it in squeeze bottles. Works best for cleaning out cuts. Also get Cipro from your doctor, it knocks out everything in your stomach. A Doctor once told me not to use a pepto style med if you get sick from something you ate. It's your body trying to get it out of your system. You're going to have a blast. It would be cool if you keep the BB posted while your over there, Bali is littered with Internet cafe's. Your in for one hell of an eye opening adventure.

"well yeah iam going for 3 months but iam also only 16 and have never gone anywhere alone."

I would just stick to Bali if I were you. The infrastructure is very limited in Sumba and to an extent the same is tru in West Jawa as far as westerners are concerned.

If you have never been out of the country you could be in for a jolt. Get a copy of "Culture Shock Indonesia", Its meant for expat workers but it will provide you with a lot of information that will help you adjust.

Bali is the one place in Indonesia where you will find the things that will provide you comfort as a westerner, food and medicines, and of course lots of other westerners. Another thing you could do to help you get adjusted is make some Indonesian friends. You can meet plenty via places like www.face-pic.com or www.friendster.com . Friendster was real popular with college kids in Jakarta last year so it should have spread to Bali by now. California community colleges usually have informal language exchange program where non native english speakers can practice with native speakers. You might be to find some Indonesians there, or at Indonesian restaraunts.

The language is easy to learn you should have already started with tapes at least, and if you are staying for three months I hope you already got your sosial-budaya visa. The consul in San Francisco can usually turn these around in a few days, but its better to do it now in case there is a hold up. You have 90 days to enter the country once you get the visa so it won't be too soon to get it now if you haven't already done so.

Kuta is to Australia what Tijuana is to people in San Diego so they have a holiday without much cultural adjustment. If you get tired of surfers or drunken holiday makers in Kuta you can always hang out in Ubud. You'll find more Amerikans there, all though alot are the new-age good vibration and all the spirituality that money can buy type.

I am working on the language but am having a tough time visa stuff i am taking care of, I am picking up a 2 month one from SF embassy and then once i get there i have a friend who lives in bali about half the year that can stamp it for another month.

What about sumbawa? I will figure out where to go once i get there i guess. any other tips?

Did Sumba for a month late in 2004. Did the entire South Coast from East to West.Came across only a handful of westerners whilst there. You will struggle to find anyone who will give you info so easily on somewhere like Sumba, including me.
