That contest was the biggest cleanest cloudbreak ever, they called it off as the cam is showing guys pull into 4x overhead barrrels.

I can remember Curren saying when he was younger he sh!t his wetsuit on a big day at HB pier...Curren was never a Pipe specialist nor a total charger in the grand scheme of surfing, and nobody thinks less of him for it.
Curren on that Fireball board in that huge surf was pretty gnarly. He's surfed some big wave at J-Bay too. Not crazy pipe waves that are barreling, but he's proven to charge bigger waves than Filipe.

Famous story of Fred Hemmings, when he was the director of the Triple Crown.

During an event that was suppose to be at Sunset it was too big so they moved it to Waimea Bay. Contestants didn’t want to go out saying it was unsurfable. Fred told them I’ll show you, he paddled out caught a bomb, came in and ran the contest.

He earned the nickname Full ahead Fred or something like that. I think MR won the contest.

I don’t think Curren ever won a North Shore contest. But I think he won the ill-fated Gotcha Pro at Sandy Beach or the year before.
