He hopes he does too - he envisions himself mercilessly flung across the reef at Chopes during the Olympics.Funny, but I hope this guy has thick skin.
Since when can money buy your way past mental limitations? He, as the WSL world champ, has the ability and financial means to conquer his fear and instead he chooses avoidance and cowardice.
The absurdity of the current way the tour is run allows him to do this.
Not the biggest wave but that was a legit heavy wipeout.actually quite sad
dude is one of the most talented surfers in the world yet has the biggest **** block in his head
any footage of him in heavy surf or having a crazy wipeout?
Those were all small days for those breaks. That's what's most infuriating, he obviously has the talent, but he's just afraid. He could be one of the greats of the sport but instead he's gonna be a footnote. Unless he changes things up in the next couple of years. It’s a strange one as Felipe has made the quarters of 2 pipe contests
and the semis of Chopes in previous years .
He may well go on and do well at these locations in the future ?
Felipe would do well by employing the likes of Billy Kemper , there are many many
talented Hawaiian watermen to add mental strength self belief to his already
great surfing .
in saying that ….he has made a dick of himself at pipe this year .
Other pros have spent years using coaches, therapists, and at-the-spot training to successfully get past their mental blocks at heavy waves on tour.Since when can money buy your way past mental limitations?
It can buy coaches, therapists, and training but all of those things are not enough.
You really do lack empathy.

That's what money can buy in terms of getting past mental limitations - a lot better chance at success than no money.
This has nothing to do with empathy, more that the WSL has created a scenario where World Champs flee Pipe.
Kelly Slater was afraid of big waves at the start of his career. He found some Hawai'ians to help him surf bigger and bigger waves. There are also apnea courses for surfers now. He's world champ and has plenty of resources available to him, he just doesn't want to use them. Those were all small days for those breaks. Those things can help but only help. He is the only one who can get past them. Money is not essential to overcome this, people do it all the time.Other pros have spent years using coaches, therapists, and at-the-spot training to successfully get past their mental blocks at heavy waves on tour.

If he wants to be respected and remembered as a great surfer, he needs to work on this. He doesn't have to. Probably won't. He's already pretty rich so if being respected outside of his inner circle doesn't matter to him, so be it. But he's gonna have to take the heat, and I'm will be trolling him from the front row seats! Those things can help but only help. He is the only one who can get past them. And this discussion has everything to do with empathy. If you experienced it, you would understand how challenging and debilitating these types of problems can be. He's a great surfer, period.
The WSL is a joke. If the person who 'wins' it doesn't like to surf scary waves, so what.
