I had a few hydronauts and didnt like them. They all felt too long and hard to turn. I usually dodge barrels anyways and didnt see the need for one in my quiver :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
hahaha I did notice some trouble turning in anything under HH on mine. It would bog coming off the top. Pretty sure that’s because it’s designed for waves with plenty of speed on tap already.

The naut feels so comfortable in big stuff though, I should not be able to get away with a 6’1 in surf Pushing DOH.

So, what’s your longest boar/tomo RN? You taking that Hydroshort out when it gets truly OH?
Longest is a 5'6. It rarely getting DOH in SoCal. I think the Hydroshort covers 90% of the big days in SoCal.

Big Blacks I would probably want a Hydronaut.

I wish I could go on a trip and find some DOH surf. I would probably chose the same quiver you did - Hydronaut for big days, V4/Hydroshort for waist to head high, and my El Tomo (or the GMM2) for smaller days. The photos you posted look dreamy.
is it an optical illusion or does the twin fin not have a qisc? the pic looks like one channel?
its an optical illusion. lol. All the boards have the QISC.

What's the consensus on the nano?
Found a 5'4 25L nano I might try and get (me 145lbs heavy)
Always liked the look so keen to try one

Amazing board! Im actually thinking about getting a used one hat is online right now to bring back that old feeling.

Me's 145lbs too. I had a 5'3 that felt perfect. The 5'4 felt a little long.

Thanks RF! I've never seen a 5'3 as all the FW ones near me are in standard dims. Ok to ride it a little oversized in lined up waves you think? I'm in a 4/3 most of the year if that helps?

Always liked the look of the nano!
Nano was the first board I got from Dan. Mine is 5'6 x 18 3/4" x 2 3/8 I dont rip like you maniacs and I could nto wrap my head around the tiny dims Dan suggested.

Actually just went back and read some of our email exchanges, fuckign comedy for days.
Dan sure has unique ways of describing boards hahaha

Its great how stoked he is on the designs he makes.

Here is a good nugget from Dan on the Nano, this was after I surfed my nano at a super hollow spot and it blew my mind on late drops.
"
the entry is great for hollow drops, it is basically flat in the nose with the rails turned up in the nose, very forgiving when you poke on late drops."

Yeah, almost all my blunt-nosed tomos (Omni, SP2, Evo, GMM2, x-wing) have been incredible at sticking late/steep drops. I think he's right-on about their functionality vs. pointed. I was surprised he declined to make me a custom El Tomo fish with a tordedo/hydronaut nose.

Most of the nano design talk was over phone sorry reforest! We talked a lot about the speed it generates, nano being a good starter planing hull, the parallel rails and their effect on both surfing the board and the volume reduction.

I was reading our convo when he first came out with sci phi and I was debating between that or a vader. Still have my pre pointy nose sci phi. Here you go .. more at www.onlyfans.com/tomoporn

Sci-phi model is like a vader except it has the ability to 'pivot' off the tail and get more radical in the pocket without any loss of speed and glide through transitions. pretty amazing design, Kinda just keeping it a little low profile as the market is still warming to the Vanguard etc.

@santacruzin post up more of the convo! I wanna hear how he describes that board.

Here ya go buddy

Tomo said:
ideally, your Mph should stand at nose height and the same width and thickness as what you would consider good for your generall conditions.
it will paddle and surf perfectly if you get these elements right
for nano, i would reccomend a 5 fin fcs setup, so you can alternate between a quad and tri fin.

If you ever go to Indo or surf sucky reefs or hollow beach breaks then the Hydronaut works in anything from head-high to DOH+. I have made waves on it that my skills alone had no business making. It's not a board for turns (for me anyway), you just make the drop and get coooooooooned! It's one of the only boards that I really could feel how the nose rocker and shape really made a difference. It just scoops and displaces the water on autopilot.

Agree 100% pretty sure there are only two spots near here I can even ride mine hahaha.

Glad to hear it wasnt just me and my shitty technique that had trouble turning it hahahaha. Just couldnt get a good release off the top.

One of my favorite boards is the Hydroshort. I've had it in every construction possible, different lengths/dims, and both tail variations. So I'm pretty confident on how the board rides. I bought one of Tomo's personal boards that had NO QISC - just a single running through out the tail. On the 1st session I could immediately tell the difference.

The one without had almost no lift. It felt like the board was sort of stuck to the water... and the board did not have the same type of rail control. On bottom turns and top turns it almost felt like the rail didnt have the same grip - like it wouldn't immediately engage with the water. Like there was a slide or a slight delay. Basically felt slower and didnt turn the same.

All of these feelings were somewhat subtle and not necessarily bad, but I did notice the difference. Which means that the concaves though the middle and on the outside rails do provide a benefit to the design (at least the Hydroshort model). I message Daniel about what I was feeling and he said he had the exact same experience.

I still ride the HS without the QISC and love it for certain conditions, but it was insightful to experiment and feel the difference.
hey mate! love hearing all the hype on the hydroshort... put my 5'9 order in with XTR a few weeks ago and hopefully will be getting it in early September. Super excited to give it a shot - I'm hoping to use it as a daily driver in head-high and above waves at OBSF throughout the fall and winter. In the meantime, what kind of Futures you think work best with the roundtail Hydroshort? I've owned so many damn Futures but have never got around to getting the medium AM1s, which seem like they might be a solid fit. I've been surfing the AM Twin +1 on my CI Rocket9 and I love the smaller center fin feeling, which might be replicated by the AM1 center fin as well.

Any other FINatics on this thread? Seems like Futures just updated their AM1 fin... not sure if it's just color scheme change or actual construction/template change. Any recs?

@HalfBlood415 I ride a 5'6 and love the AM1 fins. I used to ride the mediums but have recently switched to the large and like them better. I've also been riding the Firewire fins in size large and really like those as well.

Johnny Norris from La Jolla likes the reactors in his. I didnt like those fins though.

Thats all i got for recs. I also like the Krypt Powerdrive fins in the Hydroshort as a thruster.
