There was a condo complex I once worked on. At some time in the past, a previous worker installed a small area of paving bricks at the condo entries. The waterproofing was done negligently. There were also some structural bolts that were left out.
I was paid over $100,000 to repair all the damage, from the water and the termites that it encouraged, and the structural damage that the missing bolts caused.

While I may not wish Ifall to personally experience the outcome of his beliefs, the irony would be delicious.

That's not installing a fire alarm or a Ring or a Nest

Also, how do you know the previous work was unlicensed? Just as much blame is placed on that owner for not checking up on the work the whole time as well. Daddy Gubmint isn't saving anything here, and licenses and permitting are not what is keeping you working correctly, you yourself are doing that

  1. We've already had this conversation.

  2. Licenses are easy to get
  3. If you can't get a license, it because a) you are a felon. b) you had one and lost it c) you don't have the required years of experience, and don't know what you are doing.
Houses are expensive, and fück ups are expensive too.

If you really believe what you are saying, then you would hire unlicensed tradesmen as a point of protest against the system.

Get back to us on how that works out for you.

Licenses are a cost. The act of asking the government permission to do something is unsavory enough, but the fact you have to pay them for the permission to do something is what is extraordinary gross

Now, stop moving the goalposts about serious construction, and read what Texas is requiring licenses for working on. When you see who the ad is placed by, you can see that it is the Fire and Alarm Association trying to prevent DIYers from doing something that is extraordinarily simple because they want their own piece of the pie since they made the "investment" for a license.

This is crony capitalism at work.

You should try to not talk like an expert about things you know nothing about.

Example is fire alarms without permits?

I often ( weekly ) see electrical connections done wrong. No ground wire, connections wire-nutted together not in a box, no strain relief, not stapled to the framing. This is a real fire hazard.

The permit pays for the inspector to come and check the work being done. Building permits are not a revenue generator for the government. It pays for the services that save lives. Remember the "Ghost Ship" fire? Lots of dead folks because of a DIYer playing with wires.

Read it again.

Your worst case scenarios are allowing the government to fine people for doing something as simple as installing a Ring, a Nest, or even changing a light switch. Low voltage? Better ask for permission for that too.

Of course you hate DIYers. They take business away from you. Crony capitalism

Do you equally support the moves by car companies to stop DIYers and modifications?

I've learned that when ifall replies with the laughing face emoji, he lost the argument.
That's taking my line

The laugh was at your first sentence and last paragraph

Permits and licenses are absolutely a revenue generator. How can you even say that with a straight face? If they wren't, they'd be free

There is no permit required for installing a Ring or Nest. They are appliances. Or changing a light switch. You just make up shít.

Low voltage doesn't require a permit either.

Have you ever seen a sign in an Auto Repair Shop? "Labor rate $100 an hour. If you worked on it first $200 an hour"

Actually, on a weekly basis I tell my clients how to do homeowner stuff themselves. I've posted a ton if do it yourself instructions on this forum.

If it's so easy a homeowner can do it, then it isn't worth my time to get my hands dirty. So no, you are wrong. I'm not looking for more work.

I'm supposed to watch the guy do the work AND also know the specific
code requirements and construction protocols?!

ahahahaha

I'D RATHER PAY THE PERMIT FEE TO HAVE THE SPECIALIST COME AND
INSPECT THE WORK ON MY BEHALF

this is not a real argument

They aren't free because the city has to pay the engineer to review your plans, the inspector to check your work, the big building they work in, the car the inspector drive.

There shouldn't be commercials on t.v.. We don't need editors because I can fast forward through the stupid parts of a show. We don't need you anymore

Isn't there a low voltage license? Total assumption but I thought because there was, technically you were supposed to have a permit for low voltage work.

Also, I went through three years of litigation for a house I was having built in SB County by a reputable builder. Once the depositions were over it became clear that between the geologist, the structural engineer, and the builder, it was the builder that took a shortcut that probably 999,999 times out of a million wouldn't have mattered. He knew he did it, his attorney knew he did it, but it took years of depositions and filings to get him to the table and stroke a check. It wound up costing everyone lots of time and money that could have been easily remedied for a rounding error of the final cost to him. A license isn't a judge of character but for major work I will always follow the law or I would have been screwed.

If you care you should.

We've all know here that a license doesn't automatically quality work,
