It's funny/sad reading Hunter S. Thompson's coverage of Watergate. Nothing has really changed and the parallels between Nixon and Trump are staggering, especially their representation of the dark side of the American soul.

Empires have always been built on dark deeds. The only beauty of trump is his doing his deeds in the open and eventually admitting to them. His cult followers react with everyone does them. And imply, so what. Too bad they can't take the next step.

'Climate Science today is one step short of Alchemy.'

Time was that a denial of the accomplishments of the world's best brains was the job of those perpetuating the interests and power of the Roman Catholic Church. Any closely observed discovery or learning contrary to Church teachings was attacked. Now, anything contrary to the interest of big oil, big money, and the Mafioso-Reality TV-Miss Universe-Pro Wrestling-Dear Leader Drumpf is open to attack. In the Middle Ages the minions weren't able to read. Folks like big L quoted above may be able to read, but are evidently unable to rationally process the information they're reading (or, more likely, hearing on FOX).

At least Nixon had enough conscience to resign.

Trump will never do that.

That's the difference between psychopaths and regular crooks.

Yeah it's exactly the same, identical.
Yep, they start them young by forcing them to learn how to read and spell, then how to work out math problems, how to be observant and draw conclusions that can be supported by evidence. Next thing you know they're all brainwashed and beyond rescue...

"So, exactly what the GOP wants. Transparency."

Er, the GOP wants the opposition's playbook. They want individuals they can single out to target with vitriol and slander. They want obstruction of the process. They want power and, evidently, will try anything to keep it.

According to Cockburn’s source about the seven whistleblowers, there’s more. It is that Kushner (allegedly) gave the green light to MBS to arrest the dissident journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, who was later murdered and dismembered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. A second source tells Cockburn that this is true and adds a crucial twist to the story. This source claims that Turkish intelligence obtained an intercept of the call between Kushner and MBS. And President Erdogan used it to get Trump to roll over and pull American troops out of northern Syria before the Turks invaded. A White House official has told the Daily Mail that this story is ‘false nonsense’. However, Cockburn hears that investigators for the House Intelligence Committee are looking into it. Who knows whether any of this is true…but Adam Schiff certainly seems to be smiling a lot these days.

It all starts to sound pretty fantastical, but a quick review of the New York/New Jersey/Florida real estate hi-jinks from Trump and Kushner confirms that this sort of thing is business as usual for these guys.
