I'm not really going to address those questions/issues now.

But I did want to point out that what led me into this line of thought was attempting to calculate the amount of lift from displacement.

If a board is flat, 2 meters long, and 0.4 meters wide (roughly 6 ft long and 16 inches wide), and thick and of zero weight (this is one of those physics class questions where zero weight is allowable), how much would it need to sink to support my weight (70 kgs)?

The answer is about 9 cm, or 3.54 inches.

Now, when I look at lots of surf pics, the tail depth of the board is often 6+ inches, and the waterline 3-4 feet, which means quite a large fraction of the weight is being supported by displacement - certainly not negligible by any means. And it certainly does change, in general, with board length and angle of attack, ceteris paribus (you might want to look that last latin phrase up).
